Want to make your mark on our time? Become a Data Scientist Climate & Air Quality at TNO in Petten and Utrecht!

About this position

Climate change, air quality, and the energy transition play a huge role in defining, implementing, and monitoring policy. To properly design and implement policies, it is crucial to understand emissions and concentrations of gases and substances, at both regional and national level and ideally in real-time. At the Environmental Modelling, Sensing & Analysis (EMSA) department, we use measurement equipment and sensor networks to monitor the concentrations of various gases and particles in the air. As a Data Scientist, you support the researchers within EMSA by managing, processing, and analyzing measurement data. You ensure that data is accurate, accessible, and available for both internal and external use.

What will be your role?

Researchers at EMSA measure and monitor concentrations of different gases and particles in the air in various locations and regions across the Netherlands. We do this using fixed and mobile measurement systems and state-of-the-art equipment. Examples include nitrogen compounds, greenhouse gases, and particulate matter characterisation. The data are centrally collected and stored following FAIR principles. These data serve as input for calculations related to models, emission factors, and policy.

Your mission is to help professionalize our data landscape and enable our scientists to work in an increasingly data-driven way. In addition, we are looking for someone who can, over time, help maintain, improve, and expand our existing IT systems.

Your responsibilities include:

  • Making data from the cloud available to analysts.
  • Supporting analysts in the analysis, visualization, and interpretation of data.
  • Maintaining and extending data acquisition software to read and control measurement instruments.

What we expect from you

You have a broad interest in the field of Data Science and/or Software Engineering, stay up to date with new developments, and are not afraid to dive deep into technologies to build expertise. You feel at home in a research environment, enjoy collaborating with experts and researchers, and are motivated to use your knowledge to contribute to societal impact.

As collaboration with colleagues and researchers is an important part of this role, we expect you to be present at our Utrecht and/or Petten locations on average 2 to 3 days per week.

  • You hold at least a bachelor's degree (HBO level), for example in Data Science, Software Engineering, Computer Science, ICT, or a related field.
  • You have experience with Python and Git, and are familiar with web technologies such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. You also have experience with SQL and working with databases.
  • You enjoy collaborating with researchers and subject matter experts and take the initiative to proactively support them in their work.
  • You have a strong interest in developments in Generative AI and can identify opportunities to apply these technologies responsibly in your work.
  • Knowledge of one or more of the following is considered an advantage: ASP.NET, C#, FORTRAN, MQTT, networking, and serial communications. Experience with cloud solutions is also a plus; we work with Microsoft Azure.
  • Affinity with climate, air quality, environmental sciences, atmospheric measurements, and/or analytical laboratories is highly desirable.
  • You possess strong verbal and written communication skills in English. Proficiency in Dutch is considered an advantage.

What you'll get in return

Challenging and varied work with a real impact. And plenty of opportunities as, at TNO, you are in charge of shaping your career. We offer a gross monthly salary between € 3.500,- and € 6.150,- (based on your knowledge and experience), 8% holiday pay, a 13th month bonus of 8.33% and a flex budget (5.58% + € 180). In addition, you will be given every opportunity to develop yourself.

TNO offers optional employee benefits, enabling you to tailor your benefits package to match your personal situation. You may also expect:

  • An extremely professional, innovative working environment where colleagues are leading experts in their field.
  • The opportunity to attend courses, workshops and conferences, and to receive training and coaching based on your needs.
  • 33 days annual leave on a full-time basis plus a flexible holiday (prorated) that can be used on a cultural, religious, or otherwise important day of your choosing.
  • We offer a comprehensive and flexible mobility plan that also includes full compensation for public transportation for commuting and business travel.
  • Great social events with your team and other TNO colleagues. That’s how you will get to know a lot of people really quickly.
  • Flexible working hours, the possibility to work parttime (32 or 36 hours) and the possibility of working from home.
  • Extensive relocation package for international candidates.
  • A good pension scheme.
