Mixpanel is hiring a Director, Internal Analysis to lead the team that turns data from across the business into decisions that shape the product and company growth.
About the Team
Internal Analysis is the data team at Mixpanel — the team that turns data from every corner of the business into the decisions that shape our product and our growth. They own the full path: from raw data in source systems, through a governed warehouse, to the models, metrics, and insights leaders across the company act on.
It's two complementary disciplines under one roof. Our Analytics Engineers own the data end to end — ingesting from source systems, modeling through a medallion architecture on BigQuery, and producing the trusted tables and reporting artifacts the rest of the company runs on. Our Data Scientists build on that foundation, partnering with Product to refine the user experience and with GTM to sharpen how we grow — inspecting signals, running experiments, and surfacing the insights that change what we do next.
About the Role
You'll lead this team — and help shape Mixpanel's data culture. We're looking for someone who can influence the organization to become more metrics-driven: establishing clear KPIs, helping teams define success upfront, and ensuring analytics and data science are engaged as strategic partners from the start of an initiative, not brought in at the end to validate decisions already made. As we grow the data organization's remit across the company, this role has the scope to establish practices that don't yet exist, KPI ownership, cross-functional operating rhythms, a shared standard for what 'data-driven' means here, and where AI belongs in both how the team works and what the platform delivers. It takes building real trust with cross-functional leaders to make any of it stick.
This role reports directly into the executive team, reflecting the strategic priority we're placing on data as a company.
The role blends technical leadership, people development, and business judgment. You'll own the technical bar for how we ingest, model, govern, and instrument our data, coach senior ICs through ambiguous questions, and make sure the team's work lands — that the signals we surface actually change what the company does.
We're posting this role open to either Senior Manager or Director level, with final leveling based on the candidate's experience and scope. Strong Senior Managers ready for a step-up are encouraged to apply alongside seasoned Director-level candidates.
Responsibilities
- Build, coach, and grow a high-performing team of Analytics Engineers and Data Scientists. Invest in their development, hold a high bar for craft, and create an environment where strong technical people do their best work.
- Influence the organization to become more metrics-driven — establishing clear KPIs, helping teams define success upfront, and building the operating rhythms that make analytics a strategic partner from the start rather than an afterthought.
- Guide the team across the full data lifecycle — ingestion, modeling through our medallion architecture on BigQuery, and production of the trusted tables and reporting artifacts that serve as the company's single source of truth. You'll also help the team apply AI where it strengthens our own product, such as anomaly detection, forecasting, or AI-assisted insight generation, ensuring we're building the capabilities we'd expect any modern data function to have.
- Serve as the senior data partner to leaders across Product, Engineering, Marketing, Sales, CS, and Finance — surfacing the questions that matter, translating them into analytical approaches, and turning findings into clear recommendations. Hold the team to a standard of insight, not just analysis.
- Continue elevating standards for pipeline reliability, SQL, dbt practices, data modeling, experimentation, and statistical rigor.
- Translate company strategy into clear priorities, and guide your team through evolving business needs with clarity.
- We use Mixpanel to understand Mixpanel. Find new ways to combine our warehouse, product analytics, and experimentation tools to set the example of what data-driven looks like. With a lean team, you'll look for ways AI can extend our capacity, from AI-assisted coding and pipeline development to accelerating analysis, so the team's time goes to judgment and insight, not repetitive work.
We're Looking For Someone Who
- Has progressive experience in data and analytics in a B2B SaaS environment, including 3+ years of people management — ideally across both Analytics Engineering and Data Science. More senior candidates who've led a centralized data function are also encouraged to apply.
- Is highly effective at driving organizational change — building trust with cross-functional leaders, influencing how teams set and measure goals, and embedding data into how decisions get made.
- Brings strong technical fluency across the full data stack: ingestion and pipeline orchestration, SQL, dbt, data warehouse design (BigQuery, Snowflake, or similar), Python, statistical modeling, experimentation, and forecasting, and experience with AI.
- Fluency with applying AI in both directions: using AI tools to increase team leverage and velocity, and evaluating where AI-driven capabilities (forecasting, anomaly detection, automated insight surfacing) belong in the product itself.
- Understands the Data Science craft well enough to coach it — experimentation design, causal inference, and the judgment to know when a sophisticated method is warranted versus when a clear chart will do.
- Has partnered closely with Product and GTM leaders, with a track record of analytical work that materially changed how a company operates.
- Demonstrates a "player-coach" mentality — comfortable in a pipeline issue, model review, or SQL deep-dive, but able to step back and lead through others.
- Communicates complex concepts clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders alike, including senior leaders.
- Is a natural mentor and developer of talent, with a history of building inclusive, high-achieving teams.
- Has direct experience with the modern data stack (BigQuery, dbt, Fivetran, Hex).
Bonus Points
- Experience with Mixpanel or other product analytics tools (Amplitude, Heap, Pendo).
- Familiarity with experimentation platforms and the operational side of running a healthy A/B testing program.
- Background in PLG and/or hybrid go-to-market motions.
- Openness to — or active desire for — being a public-facing voice for the craft: speaking, writing, and shaping best practices for analytics and product analytics across the wider SaaS community.
