At TU Delft, you will enable groundbreaking research while helping researchers, students and industry partners transform innovative ideas into working devices as a MEMS Fabrication Technician.

Job description

As a MEMS Fabrication Technician, you play a key role in developing, optimizing and supporting advanced cleanroom fabrication processes for cutting-edge MEMS technologies. Your work contributes to a wide range of applications, including electron optics, acoustics, photonics, microscopy and imaging.

Your work focuses on executing and continuously improving a broad range of cleanroom processes, including wet-chemical processing (such as wet etching, sample cleaning and lift-off), conductive and non-conductive coating, optical, laser and electron beam lithography, reactive ion etching (RIE and DRIE), stacking, alignment, bonding and wire bonding. You monitor process quality, investigate deviations and identify opportunities to improve reliability, reproducibility and efficiency.

You work closely with principal investigators, postdoctoral researchers, PhD candidates and fellow cleanroom specialists to support research projects. You also provide hands-on technical support to researchers, students and industrial users, helping them successfully use the cleanroom facilities and fabrication technologies.

An important part of your role is sharing knowledge and enabling others to succeed. You train and guide new users in approved cleanroom procedures, contribute to a safe and efficient working environment, and help ensure the reliability of cleanroom equipment and fabrication processes. You understand that groundbreaking research depends on both discipline and creativity: strict adherence to cleanroom protocols provides the foundation that allows researchers the freedom to explore, experiment and innovate with confidence.

This position offers the opportunity to work at the interface of academic research and industrial innovation. Acting as the bridge between the Imaging Physics department and our two cleanroom facilities, Else Kooi Laboratories and Kavli Nanolab, you connect researchers with the technical expertise and infrastructure needed to turn ambitious ideas into reality.

Job requirements

You enjoy working at the interface of fundamental research and industrial innovation, collaborating with both academic and industrial partners to achieve tangible results. Embracing the opportunity to work with leading industrial partners, you know how to collaborate and achieve meaningful results geared to the development of pragmatic applications. You also put your curiosity to good use: you don’t take anomalies for granted and take the initiative to dig deeper and spar with experts. Harnessing your communication skills, you convince colleagues at TU Delft and others of your approach, models and designs.

You also have:

  • You hold a HBO, BSc or MSc degree in Chemistry, Physics, Process Technology or a closely related field. This is a must-have.
  • This position is not suitable for candidates who are already on an academic career track (PhD or postdoc).
  • You have hands-on experience with MEMS fabrication and working in a cleanroom. Candidates with a foundation in MEMS fabrication who are eager to further develop their cleanroom and MEMS fabrication expertise are also encouraged to apply.
  • You have excellent interpersonal skills and communicate confidently and respectfully with researchers, students and colleagues. This is a must-have.
  • You enjoy working in a collaborative team, are open to self-reflection and provide constructive, solution-oriented feedback.
  • You communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing. Knowledge of Dutch is an advantage.
  • You enjoy sharing your expertise and are motivated to train, guide and support new cleanroom users.
  • You are eligible to work in the Netherlands and hold a valid Dutch work permit. Due to Dutch regulations this is a must-have.

We welcome applications from both experienced MEMS fabrication technicians and candidates at an earlier stage of their career.

If you already have extensive cleanroom experience, you will be able to work independently and help train colleagues and users in our state-of-the-art facilities. If you have a foundation in MEMS fabrication but are still developing your expertise, we will support you with a structured onboarding programme, intensive coaching and a personal development plan of up to two years. During this training period, you will be appointed in the introductory salary scale (Scale 9).

Conditions of employment

  • Duration of contract is 1 year, temporary with prospect of permanent.
  • You will receive a salary based on Scale 10 of the Collective Labor Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO NU). If, at the start of your employment, you do not yet fully meet the requirements of the position, you may be appointed in the entry scale (Scale 9) in accordance with Article 3.7 of the CAO NU.
  • An excellent pension scheme via the ABP.
  • The possibility to compile an individual employment package every year.
  • Discount with health insurers on supplemental packages.
  • Flexible working week.
  • Every year, 232 leave hours (at 38 hours). You can also sell or buy additional leave hours via the individual choice budget.
  • Plenty of opportunities for education, training and courses.
  • Partially paid parental leave.
  • Attention for working healthy and energetically with the vitality program.
  • Only candidates from EU countries or with a Dutch work permit can be considered for this vacancy due to Dutch regulations.
