Haskoning offers a coastal engineering graduation internship in collaboration with Delta Marine Consultants. The internship offers a rare chance to gain hands-on experience with 2D physical model testing, directly contributing to real-world solutions in coastal engineering. If you’re eager to make a tangible impact and expand your technical expertise, this is a great opportunity.

The influence of large wave periods on the roughness coefficient and overtopping of an Xbloc armoured slope

What you will do as coastal engineering graduation intern

As a graduation intern, you will conduct 2D physical model tests on Xbloc(Plus) armoured slopes using a wave flume. Your primary tasks will involve investigating the influence of long wave periods on the roughness coefficient and wave overtopping. You will analyse and compare your experimental results with existing literature and empirical formulas used in the field, with the aim of deepening understanding and potentially proposing changes to coefficients and formulas for practical application.

  • Conduct a literature study on the roughness coefficient and its relation to wave overtopping for revetments and on the influence of long wave periods on this relation.
  • Conduct 2D physical model tests on revetments to investigate the relation between long wave periods, the roughness coefficient and wave overtopping.
  • Analyse and interpret the results and compare them to existing values from literature.

What you bring as an Intern

You are an analytical Master’s student with a strong interest in coastal and hydraulic engineering. You enjoy combining theory with practical testing and are motivated to translate experimental results into engineering insights. You work accurately, take initiative, and are comfortable collaborating with both academic and industry supervisors. The following is required:

  • Enrolled in a Master’s programme in Hydraulic Engineering, Coastal Engineering, or a closely related field
  • Able to spend multiple weeks in Gouda conducting the physical model tests
  • Able to work regularly from the offices in Delft and/or Amersfoort and/or Rotterdam
  • To ensure effective supervision, mentoring, and alignment with our internship and development programs, candidates must be enrolled at a Dutch university (WO) during the entire duration of the internship. This is a mandatory requirement for consideration.
