Job Description

This internship starts as of September 2026, has a duration of at least 6 months, and is a non-thesis internship.

Development acceleration of IOT devices by using Zephyr

You will be part of the connectivity group and work together with people from other groups in the Electronic Systems & IoT department. The Electronic Systems & IoT department is part of Philips Engineering Solutions and is located on the High Tech Campus in Eindhoven, the Netherlands.

In this role, you will implement or port existing cloud use cases, including provisioning, data upload/download, and FOTA, using HTTP/TLS/TCP protocols on Zephyr-capable hardware. Once functional, the effort to move code to different hardware will be benchmarked against existing dedicated solutions. The assignment can be adapted towards a graduate or internship project.

You are responsible for:

  • Defining a set of use cases for this benchmark.
  • Defining the initial Zephyr-capable hardware setup.
  • Defining a set of Zephyr-capable boards to be used for the porting benchmark.
  • Implementing the cloud use case, including data upload/download over TLS and provisioning.
  • Defining the metrics to be used for the benchmark, such as development time, code reuse, and test impact.
  • Porting the code to the selected Zephyr-capable boards.
  • Benchmarking to determine maturity and opportunities to accelerate IoT implementations with Zephyr.

Interview requirement

During the interview process, you will be asked to demonstrate your own built Zephyr application. This can be a very basic application, minimally a Zephyr example with minimal changes, running on hardware of your choice. This could be a notebook or any other self-selected platform.

You're the right fit if:

  • You are studying towards your Master in Electrical Engineering, Software, Embedded Systems Engineering, or related studies.
  • You are familiar with programming on embedded devices.
  • You are motivated to learn developing applications with Zephyr.
  • You are familiar with IP-based protocols such as HTTP, TCP, and TLS.
  • You have affinity with cloud technology.
  • You have affinity with courses on the subject of connectivity/IoT.
  • You are able to work in a multidisciplinary environment.
  • You are fluent in English.
  • You have affinity for both theoretical and practical work.

How we work together

We believe that we are better together than apart. For our office-based teams, this means working in person at least 3 days per week. Onsite roles require full-time presence in the company’s facilities. Field roles are most effectively done outside of the company’s main facilities, generally at customers’ or suppliers’ locations.

We offer you:

  • A non-stop growth opportunity within a global multinational company.
  • A monthly full-time allowance between €500 - €700 gross, depending on your education level and whether you need to relocate to the Netherlands. Part-time internships receive the allowance pro rata.
  • Housing compensation if you need to relocate near the office, subject to eligibility requirements.
  • Travel compensation if you are not eligible for a free public transport card, up to €192 net as a monthly allowance.
  • Paid holidays per internship term.
  • The opportunity to buy Philips products at the Philips shop.
