About this position

Would you like to contribute to the security of the Netherlands by analyzing the latest torpedo defense systems and evaluating operations involving submarines and underwater drones? Then join TNO as a Maritime Analyst within the Under Water Warfare domain.

As a Maritime Analyst at TNO, you will work at the intersection of technology, science, and defense. You will contribute to scientific and technical research projects that help the Dutch Ministry of Defence—and particularly the Royal Netherlands Navy—make better-informed decisions.

Together with your colleagues, you will analyze qualitative and quantitative data, much of which is generated through simulations that you help develop and improve yourself. You will also design concepts and algorithms and provide advice that impacts military units, policymakers, and decision-makers at both national and international levels.

You will be part of the Underwater Operations & Seabed Security department, which focuses on research into autonomous underwater systems, such as mine countermeasure drones, anti-submarine warfare, torpedo defense, and the protection of critical underwater infrastructure. The department develops advanced acoustic sensors, data-processing techniques, and performance models to assess threats and operational effectiveness under varying underwater conditions.

What will be your role?

As a Maritime Analyst at TNO, you will work in a dynamic environment where technology, simulation, data analysis, and defense come together. Your role is focused on underwater warfare and maritime operations, requiring close collaboration with experts, analysts, and software developers across multiple departments.

In one project, you may develop a new sensor model; in another, you may analyze the effectiveness of an autonomous underwater vehicle. A key tool in your work is JROADS, an advanced Java-based simulation environment used for defense-related scenario analysis across all military domains.

Your activities may include:

  • Preparing, analyzing, and evaluating maritime operations, particularly in the field of underwater warfare.
  • Combining analytical work with software development activities.
  • Contributing to the development of JROADS, together with a team of approximately twelve developers.
  • Analyzing qualitative and quantitative data generated through simulations.
  • Supporting the maintenance and optimization of systems aboard naval vessels.
  • Designing innovative concepts and systems for maritime operations.
  • Reporting findings and providing recommendations to military units based on data analysis and research.

What we expect from you

In addition to being enthusiastic about our mission, you recognize yourself in the following profile:

Education

  • A Master's degree (MSc) in a technical or scientific discipline, preferably Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Applied Physics, or a comparable technical-scientific field.

Technical Skills

  • Demonstrated affinity with and/or experience in developing and using physical models and simulations.
  • Experience with mathematical optimization and statistical analysis is an advantage.
  • Programming experience in Java, C#, or C++.
  • Familiarity with object-oriented programming techniques.
  • Understanding of software development concepts such as Git, Continuous Integration / Continuous Deployment (CI/CD), and Agile methodologies.
  • Ability to abstract complex systems and translate them into models and algorithms.

Personal Skills

  • Proactive and assertive.
  • Takes ownership and responsibility for results.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills.
  • Excellent command of both Dutch and English, spoken and written.

What you'll get in return

Challenging and varied work with a real impact. At TNO, you are in charge of shaping your career. In addition, you will be given every opportunity to develop yourself.

  • An extremely professional, innovative working environment where colleagues are leading experts in their field.
  • The opportunity to attend courses, workshops and conferences, and to receive training and coaching based on your needs.
  • 33 days annual leave plus a flexible holiday that can be used on a cultural, religious, or otherwise important day of your choosing (on a full-time basis).
  • Flexible working hours, the possibility to work parttime (32 or 36 hours) and the possibility of working from home.
