EHRI-ERIC is looking for a highly organised and proactive Finance Officer to ensure the sound administration of its finances.

Working closely with the EHRI-ERIC Director and an external bookkeeping company, this is a broad role. It encompasses the preparation and control of EHRI-ERIC’s core budget, the development and oversight of sound financial systems and processes, the preparation, monitoring, and financial reporting of externally funded projects, the provision of financial and administrative advice to staff and external partners, and ensuring that EHRI-ERIC’s financial operations comply with applicable regulations and adhere to the principles of transparency and sound financial management.

This is a core position at the Central Hub of EHRI-ERIC, hosted by the NIOD Institute for War, Holocaust and Genocide Studies, Amsterdam, an institute of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW). It will initially be offered as a one-year contract with the possibility of conversion to a permanent contract thereafter. All employees of EHRI-ERIC are employed by NIOD-KNAW and seconded to EHRI-ERIC.

What you will be doing

  • Provide advice to the EHRI-ERIC Director, staff and partners on financial, fiscal and administrative matters
  • Prepare the annual budget of EHRI-ERIC and its annual financial report
  • Proactively identify, analyse and report on deviations from the annual budget
  • Manage financial inflows and outflows and ensure that transactions are processed on time and in line with applicable standards and regulations
  • Support the preparation, management, and financial reporting of third-party funded projects, in coordination with scientific project leaders
  • Coordinate EHRI-ERIC’s financial and fiscal operations including procurement processes, contracts and VAT returns
  • Establish robust internal financial procedures that work seamlessly with the systems of EHRI-ERIC’s hosting institution – NIOD-KNAW – and its external bookkeeper – Bacom
  • Initiate and supervise audits as required
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable laws and regulations
  • Develop and implement a system for the accounting of in-kind contributions to EHRI-ERIC from its distributed national nodes
  • Contribute to the drafting of financial documentation, reports, and internal guideline

What you will be contributing

Essential skills and experiences:

  • A completed HBO (higher professional education) degree, for example in Business Economics or SPD Accountancy or equivalent professional experience
  • Several years of experience in a financial administration role preferably in research infrastructures, public or private research organisations, public institutions, or international organisations
  • Experience in financial planning, management and reporting
  • Proficiency in using digital tools and platforms for accounting, financial monitoring, and reporting, particularly Excel
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, and a solid working knowledge of Dutch
  • Strong organisational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks independently, ensuring accuracy and timely delivery
  • Teamwork-oriented aptitude, with proven ability to work constructively with colleagues and external partners

Desirable skills and experiences:

  • Knowledge of the financial management of EU-funded projects
  • Understanding of ERIC-related financial regulations
  • Understanding of the financial administration of in-kind contributions
  • Previous experience of working in an international environment
  • An affinity with the mission of EHRI-ERIC

About EHRI-ERIC

On 20 January 2025, the European Commission established the European Holocaust Research Infrastructure (EHRI) as a European Research Infrastructure Consortium (ERIC). EHRI-ERIC is a permanent, distributed Research Infrastructure dedicated to support trans-national Holocaust research and documentation. EHRI-ERIC is currently supported by ten member countries and by a consortium of more than 50 individual institutions organized into ten national nodes. The Central Hub of EHRI-ERIC takes care of the legal, administrative and financial running of EHRI-ERIC, the coordination of the provision of EHRI-ERIC’s user services, and the development of its overall strategies and policies.

The NIOD Institute for War, Holocaust, and Genocide Studies is a scientifically independent yet strongly socially oriented institute. In addition to conducting scientific research, NIOD makes its collections accessible to both professionals and the general public.
