GKN Aerospace Careers is offering an Engineering Internship Assignment in Papendrecht, NL.

This internship is within the Fokker Elmo Engineering department, which is comprised of different disciplines in the Electrical Wiring Interconnection System (EWIS) core business. The assignment is related to the EWIS Components & Environmental Testing (ECE) discipline, which is mainly responsible for the definition, selection and qualification testing of standard parts, materials and constructions. This work is critical for EWIS configurations in demanding environments such as engines and landing gears.

The term EWIS covers all wiring harnesses (bundles) in a typical aircraft, performing the function of power and data transportation between electrical equipment, from the generation of electrical power up to the individual electrical equipment of different aircraft systems.

Challenge for the applicant

Subject: Engine wire harness endpoint mechanical stress characterization

GKN Fokker Elmo is a large player in engine wire harness qualification activities. One of the challenges is to move from engineering judgement-driven decision-making to data-driven decision-making in order to reduce the number of test samples required to qualify a new product. This will reduce the overall lead time and cost of the product design process.

GKN Fokker Elmo is looking for a characterization of the mechanical stress acting on a wire harness endpoint when it is subjected to engine vibration levels while considering different boundaries. This will enable better analysis and rationale on which configurations have to be qualified by testing and which configurations can be qualified by analysis.

Task description

The graduate is tasked to perform the following:

  • Determine the scope and boundaries of the project within a project plan.
  • Determine a method to detect mechanical stress on wire harness endpoints.
  • Create a test plan including test sample rationale.
  • Create test sample definitions based on current designs.
  • Generate test data on the shaker.
  • Perform analysis based on the generated test data.
  • Create a test report documenting the above.

Required applicant profile

  • Type of internship: Final year assignment
  • Required language: English / Dutch; verbal and written
  • Start date: January / September
