You’ll help solve some of bol’s most complex technical challenges, enabling product teams to build reliable, high-quality solutions that reach customers faster.

The biggest challenge

Balancing multiple perspectives and levels to make a direct impact. You are an engineer who can focus on hands-on implementation for high impact company initiatives, supporting teams building fit-for-purpose solutions to complex and challenging problems. You must ensure the designs are aligned with long-term architectural goals. You address problems with a long-term solution perspective while staying focused on immediate, practical progress. You create clarity and momentum where others may be blocked.

What you will do

Your primary responsibility as a Staff Engineer will be to help design and engineer capabilities within various areas in bol's e-commerce platform. You utilize your experience to bring those abstract ideas to reality with the quality and attention to detail that our customers expect. Our ideal candidate has a deep knowledge of software engineering and is well versed in the emerging AI fundamentals to help bring these capabilities to production. Although AI is not your sole focus, expect it to play a big role, like any emerging technology.

For AI, this means:

1. AI enablement - you will cooperate with various stakeholders in Product and Engineering to help design solutions to bring more AI capabilities to our customers*. We expect you to play a key role in making sure that solutions are fit-for-purpose in a production setting with proper attention to reliability, efficiency, infrastructure design, security and cost.
2. AI tooling - you will help shape how AI tools and AI-enabled ways of working are introduced across product, tech, and data teams.
3. You'll cooperate with other departments, like our Technical Platform, and other Staff Engineers on how to make engineering more efficient and impactful.

You will take on a technical role within project assignments, working in close collaboration with a variety of stakeholders - product and engineering leadership, lead engineers, enterprise architects and engineering teams. Your expertise will be vital in key cross-product initiatives. You'll be the go-to person for identifying and analyzing bottlenecks and recommending solutions. Collaboration and knowledge sharing will be integral, as you will work closely with fellow Staff Engineers and the technical platform on domain and enterprise-wide topics, steering bol’s overall technical direction.

• Collaborate with product and engineering leadership across multiple teams and products to bring fit-for-purpose solutions to our customers, balancing speed with quality.
• Help evolve AI capabilities and practices within the organization. You will help decide and design our approach to topics such as agentic systems.
• You will be hands-on with implementing the necessary infrastructure to support these capabilities.
• Take accountability for solving complex technical issues that require a deep understanding of systems and architecture, driving solutions that may impact multiple teams or products.
• Be a role model of a technical leader: demonstrating excellent engineering practices, guiding teams in adopting innovative solutions, and taking accountability to deliver projects on time.
• Incorporate industry trends and emerging technologies where needed, evaluating the potential impact and designing plans to integrate into our ways of working.

What you’ll bring to the team

• Experience with enabling AI capabilities. You understand the tradeoffs between different designs and systems, when to apply LLMs and when not to apply LLMs. You will utilize your experience designing, deploying and monitoring AI-enabled systems in production environments.
• 8-10+ years of experience in software development, having worked in microservice-based architecture in a cloud native environment.
• Strong architectural and solution design skills, allowing you to build scalable and innovative systems with reliability and performance in mind.
• A pragmatic, results-driven leadership style, focusing on impact while keeping things grounded and practical.
• Proactive mindset – You don’t hope others will fix your problems, you spot them early and act accordingly.

Where you'll be working

You will have the opportunity to work and think along with a group of Staff Engineers who bring a variety of experience and backgrounds: software engineering, architecture and system design, test engineering, and data science. You will report to the Head of Staff Engineering but will be deployed to the core and journey domains where you will help engineering leadership deliver their most critical projects. As part of the Staff Engineer team, you’ll join a group of curious, pragmatic, and highly experienced engineers who learn from one another and support each other in making a broader impact.
