Are you a Bsc student in Mechanical Engineering with an interest in precision mechanics, dynamics and construction principles? Do you want to work on a challenging motion system in which accuracy, speed, stiffness and cost price all come together? We are looking for you!

BSc: Graduation Assignment Mechanical Engineering - Design of a fast multi-way paper switch

Your assignment

In high-end productive sheetfed printing systems, paper sheets are transported at high speeds throughout the system. To enable functionalities like backside printing, proofing of quality control sheets and diverting misprinted sheets, sheets can follow different trajectories in the printing system. This requires a device that can reliably and quickly switch between those trajectories.

Currently, a fast-switching device is being developed that can switch between two destination paths. The goal of this assignment is to further develop this technology to enable switching between more than two destinations in one device, allowing for a more compact engine lay-out with more options. This introduces challenging requirements in terms of cost-price, space and actuation mechanism.

The assignment starts with gaining insight into the system requirements and the rationale behind the current implementation. Based on this understanding, you will propose concepts for the multi-way switch. After selecting the most promising concept, the device will be elaborated, built and tested. The project combines theoretical knowledge of mechanics, system dynamics and actuation with the practical aspects of implementation, construction and testing.
