Software Engineer - Release Tooling

This is Adyen

Adyen provides payments, data, and financial products in a single solution for customers like Meta, Uber, H&M, and Microsoft - making us the financial technology platform of choice.

For our teams, we create an environment with opportunities for our people to succeed, backed by the culture and support to ensure they are enabled to truly own their careers. We are motivated individuals who tackle unique technical challenges at scale and solve them as a team. Together, we deliver innovative and ethical solutions that help businesses achieve their ambitions faster.

As a Software Engineer in Release & Tooling, you will build the release tooling and testing frameworks and monitoring tools that power Adyen’s monthly firmware and mobile releases. Collaborating across teams, you will directly optimize and scale the reliability of our global physical payment infrastructure.

Payments Solution, Devices Stream

Adyen devices enable merchants with physical stores to accept card or eWallet present transactions. It's relevant for retailers in fashion, electronic and consumer goods, lifestyle and leisure (i.e. gyms, theme parks) and hospitality (i.e. hotels, quick service restaurants, bars, cafes).

Integrated with the Adyen platform, POS terminals help merchants to evolve and provide future focused in-store shopping experiences. Our one system, one partner and one contract set-up enables merchants to go global effortlessly with latest payment innovations and features.

Rollout and Observability

The Rollout & Observability team is responsible for the predictable, secure, and data-driven deployment of terminal firmware to the devices in the field. Operating on a strict monthly release cadence, the team uses the continuous delivery pipelines, automation tooling, and quality gates necessary to transition firmware safely from development to production environments.

Our mission is to eliminate manual overhead, minimize human error, and provide absolute visibility into release health.

Release Engineering & Orchestration

  • Cadence Management: The team owns and executes the end-to-end monthly terminal firmware release lifecycle.
  • Process Optimization: Continuously analyzes the release train to eliminate bottlenecks, shorten feedback loops, and improve deployment velocity.
  • Risk Mitigation: Implements guardrails and automated "error-proofing" mechanisms to ensure releases are deterministic and safe.

Test Automation Infrastructure & Tooling

  • Unified Execution Frameworks: The team uses internal tools used to schedule, execute, and monitor firmware testing across highly diverse environments.
  • Robotic & Framework Integration: The team coordinates the automated test suites utilizing physical robotics and farms to simulate real-world user interactions.

Observability & Quality Reporting

  • Data-Driven Quality Gates: Develops and maintains the release quality reporting engine that aggregates test results from all frameworks.
  • Health Metrics & Insights: Provide actionable telemetry and comprehensive quality reports to stakeholders, ensuring a firmware version meets strict stability criteria before production rollout.

What you’ll do:

As the Software Engineer in Release & Tooling, you will be part of the Integrity Stream and focussed on:

  • Build & Enhance Tooling: Design and develop scalable software tools, frameworks, and continuous delivery pipelines to automate and support monthly firmware releases and mobile releases.
  • Scale Analytics & Observability: Analyze our current infrastructure to design future-proof, data-driven analytics systems that track and report the health of Adyen’s payment terminals.
  • Advance Automation Frameworks: Create and maintain robust test-execution frameworks that validate critical system functionality, interfacing directly with our robotic testing setups and device farms.
  • Collaborate & Consult: Partner closely with core development teams to optimize their testing setups and advise on the best automation and validation strategies for new features.
  • Drive Reliability: Contribute directly to making Adyen’s global physical payment infrastructure more robust, predictable, and resilient.

What we are looking for:

As the Software Engineer in Release & Tooling, you are:

  • An Automation-First Engineer: You are a seasoned developer with a strong quality, reliability, and continuous delivery mindset, preferably with Java/Kotlin/Android technologies.
  • Strong on Prioritization: You thrive in fast-paced environments and can pragmatically prioritize high-impact tasks.
  • Full-Stack Developer: You are well-versed in modern software development practices, CI/CD patterns, automated testing methodologies and AI enthusiast.
  • Hardware-Adjacent Enthusiast: You are excited by the prospect of writing software that interacts with the physical world (Hardware-in-the-Loop, POS Terminals, Robots, and Device Farms).
  • Data-Driven Decision Maker: You rely on telemetry, metrics, and logs rather than intuition. You are passionate about data and visualisation to track release health, analyze trends, and use concrete data to justify rollout decisions.
  • Pragmatic Collaborator: You are comfortable balancing core development with occasional operational support to keep the release train moving smoothly.

Minimum qualifications

  • 3–5 years of professional software development experience.
  • Strong production experience with Kotlin or Java.
  • Deep familiarity with Linux and mobile environments.
  • Hands-on experience building, maintaining, and scaling CI/CD pipelines and automated testing tools.
  • Proven expertise in complex release lifecycles, preferably involving mobile operating systems.
  • Strong understanding of data-driven engineering, using telemetry, metrics, and dashboards to monitor release health and inform rollout decisions.
