At Chordify we’re looking for an Android Developer to join our Labs team.

About the job

Our mission at Chordify is to make it as easy as possible for musicians of all skill levels to learn to play their favorite music.

As an Android Developer in our Labs team, you will help bring new educational and music technology ideas to life in our Android app. You’ll work on features that help musicians practice, play, and improve, while also contributing to the modernization of our Android codebase.

This role is a great fit for someone with solid Android experience who wants to work close to product innovation, music learning, and audio technology. You’ll get the freedom to come up with solutions, ask questions, challenge ideas, and take ownership of Android development within Labs.

The Labs team works on new ways to help musicians move forward in their favorite songs. This can mean improving practice tools, working on streaming integrations, exploring new audio technology, making lyrics or tuning features more useful, or helping us build completely new learning experiences. Not everything is clear-cut from the start, so your input will be needed to find the right balance between vision, design, and implementation.

You’ll thrive here if you:

  • Have a minimum of 4 years of experience developing Android apps
  • Have strong Kotlin skills
  • Are proficient in Jetpack Compose, Coroutines, Flow, and Dependency Injection
  • Have worked on an existing app or larger codebase before
  • Have experience with the full Android release cycle, including testing, CI/CD, and Google Play Store rollouts
  • Take ownership of your work and have the intrinsic drive to get things released
  • Communicate clearly, ask questions, and reach out when you need help
  • Take initiative and enjoy finding practical solutions, even when not everything is documented or fully defined yet
  • Like improving both user-facing features and the codebase behind them
  • Enjoy thinking along from a product perspective, not only from a technical perspective
  • Are enthusiastic about our product and curious about music-learning technology
  • Are comfortable working in a team where priorities can shift, and where you sometimes need to help decide what to pick up, postpone, or say no to

Nice-to-haves:

  • Experience with automated testing, MVVM, Clean Architecture, modularization, Gradle, CI/CD, or the Google Play Store release process
  • Experience with audio-related development, music technology, streaming integrations, or educational products
  • Interest in Rust or FFI
  • Experience in a smaller company, scale-up, or product environment where ownership and flexibility were important

Why join us?

  • Be part of a friendly, open, and caring team from a variety of cultural and professional backgrounds
  • Work in an autonomous workforce, with our own flavor of the Holacracy method
  • Use Agile principles in most of our day-to-day work
  • Have real impact without micromanagement
  • Love music!

You will

  • Build and improve Android features for musicians all over the world
  • Take part in the Labs way of working: we use Agile principles, but we don’t work in a traditional Scrum setup. This means you’ll have room to think along, take ownership, and help shape priorities together with the team.
  • Work on Labs projects that explore new educational and music technology ideas
  • Help implement features such as improvements to practice tools, streaming integrations, and usability tweaks in the app
  • Collaborate closely with UI/UX Design, backend developers, and other Android developers
  • Give input from an Android development perspective during product planning
  • Help reduce technical debt and improve the Android codebase step by step
  • Help modernize the Android codebase and make technical improvements that speed up future development
  • Learn how our Android architecture works and contribute to its future direction

In your first months, we’ll help you get familiar with our way of working, our product, and how Chordify is organized. You’ll start with a well-scoped development project, so you can learn by doing while getting to know the team, the codebase, and our Android setup. This could be something like improving usability in existing Toolkit features, working on a streaming service integration, or making a focused improvement to one of our practice experiences.

Over time, you’ll grow into someone who can take ownership of Android features within Labs, actively contribute ideas in team discussions, and help shape how new music-learning experiences are built in the app. After 12 months, success means you are fully integrated in the team: delivering implementations, improving existing features, giving input from an Android perspective on future ideas, and taking an active role in discussions with Design and the rest of Labs throughout the feature cycle.

In the longer term, there is room to go deeper into Android development, music technology, and product innovation. You can help move the Android codebase forward, support long-term ideas for Labs and the Android Guild, and become one of the people who helps decide how we bring new learning experiences to life on Android.

You get

  • Flexible working hours
  • To work at either our Utrecht or Groningen office and, if you want, partially from home
  • A pension scheme
  • A daily free lunch, snacks, and drinks
  • Commuting expenses reimbursed
  • The possibility to take part in our lease bike program
  • A budget each year to spend on anything music related
  • To be part of an international team of music lovers
  • To enjoy after-work drinks, jam-sessions, or gaming nights in the office with fellow Chordifyers whenever you feel like it
  • To make music during work
  • To trade public holidays for other days that are important to you
  • To focus on your mental health through OpenUp

Our take on requirements

You don’t need to tick every box to apply. We care more about your curiosity, motivation, and willingness to learn than about a perfect match on paper.
