Role Description

Global tax regulations continue to change and local tax reporting and collection obligations for platforms are becoming a new reality. Booking.com is looking for additional support from a Tax Manager (generalist) to expand the Tax team. The Tax Manager will focus on supporting the tax technical positions for material jurisdictions. This will mainly focus on direct tax positions within the company such as PE and location strategy, Innovation Box and restructuring projects, but this could also expand to other taxes like VAT/GST, DST and other local taxes.

US GAAP reporting and ETR calculation experience will be a requisite for this role to support the Tax Accounting team with the ETR calculation and perform a final review.

As a Tax Manager you will work for Booking.com in Amsterdam, Booking.com’s headquarters, where the entire tax department sits. You will report directly into one of the Senior Tax Managers. The tax department currently consists of around 50 persons, responsible for various disciplines including CIT, TP, VAT, Tax accounting and other expert areas. The tax department is part of Booking.com’s international Finance team, which includes approximately 1000 professionals, mostly based in Amsterdam.

The role involves close interaction with the entire tax team, the parent company Booking Holdings Group based in Norwalk, Connecticut, international offices, business managers, functional teams and other finance colleagues. Therefore it is essential that you have excellent management and communication skills in English.

Due to the rapid changes in the organization, the tasks and duties of this role may evolve over time. You will be keen to develop and grow within the role and to take on additional challenges and responsibilities as they occur.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage all material tax positions within the organization, including Innovation Box.
  • Assist in advisory projects such as Permanent Establishment (PE) analysis, liquidation of foreign entities, location strategy for hiring foreign talent, etc.
  • Review CIT returns and Innovation Box workings for all material entities within the organization.
  • Improve existing processes and support the tax accounting team in relation to all quarter close reporting activities.
  • Assist in direct tax audits including voluntary disclosure proceedings and relationship with the Dutch tax authorities.
  • Ensure compliance with local tax rules and regulations.
  • Support in setting up new business plans and strategies where they would impact tax compliance processes.
  • Contribute to tax awareness and appreciation within the group.
  • Interface with outside advisors to protect the business model and its international setup.

Requirements of special knowledge/skills

  • University degree in Tax Economics/Law or similar degree.
  • Preferably 6+ years of working experience within a Big 4 and/or international environment.
  • Combination of experience with US GAAP tax accounting processes is much preferred.
  • Knowledge of Dutch income tax and indirect tax regulations is much preferred.
  • Self-starter, flexible, energetic, passionate, self-motivated, and results-oriented professional.
  • Accurate, able to work under pressure and to strict deadlines, and comfortable working in a fast turnaround environment and managing multiple priorities simultaneously.
  • Ability to think strategically, multi-task, and work effectively and efficiently with minimum direction, taking ownership of tasks and responsibilities.
  • Ability to clearly express ideas and information to various stakeholders in the business and tailor your style according to the specific situation and audience.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, in English and Dutch.
