Are you a pioneering data scientist who likes to think outside-the-box? Would you like to drive new data science solutions to tackle financial fraud? Do you want to work with cutting-edge technologies to catch criminals?

As a data scientist in Grid Channel Security, you will work together with fraud experts, data scientists, machine learning engineers and data analysts to safeguard customers from criminals. This includes threats such as phishing, account takeover, lost or stolen debit cards, e-commerce fraud, and more.

Your role will encompass analyzing diverse data sources to get actionable insights. This analysis will include understanding fraud trends across various payment channels, evaluating the potential of different data fields to enhance fraud detection, recognizing seasonal patterns, and creating reliable forecasts. Your contributions will extend beyond immediate solutions, serving as a catalyst for ongoing improvements in fraud detection capabilities through model experimentation and the integration of new data elements. In addition to your focused problem-solving efforts, you will be collaborating with others to brainstorm how data science solutions can help the team stay one step ahead of criminals in the ongoing cat-and-mouse game.

ABN AMRO is a future driven bank that is working continuously on unlocking the power of data, and you will be part of this transformation.

Your job

As a data scientist in the Fraud Monitoring team, you will help prevent and detect payment fraud by applying data science and machine learning in a real-world, high-impact environment.

Working environment

Grid Channel Security within Corporate Information Security Office (CISO) is responsible for the prevention and detection of payment fraud, and deciding the policy and strategy in the area of fraud. The Fraud Monitoring team is a motivated multidisciplinary group of approximately 25 colleagues working with a focus on protecting customers. The team works in a hybrid way and day-to-day work is organized by agile and scrum principles. CISO is recognised as having an informal work atmosphere where everyone has a heart for their job and is prepared to help others.

Your profile

We are looking for a data scientist with strong technical and problem-solving skills, as well as a collaborative mindset. There are no "lone wolves" on this team. You should care deeply about helping your colleagues, mentoring, and coaching where possible, while maintaining a learning mindset.

Required Qualifications and technical skills:

  • A master’s degree or PhD in a quantitative field such as Computer Science, Statistics, Econometrics, Engineering, Physics, or Mathematics.
  • 3 years of independent machine learning development experience, including exploratory data analysis, model experimentation, and collaborating with engineers for model deployment in real-world applications.
  • Demonstrated professional experience developing ML models in a big data environment, for example Spark or other distributed computing frameworks.
  • Strong working knowledge of Python, SQL, and Spark.
  • Familiarity with MLOps concepts such as lineage, reproducibility, and model monitoring, and experience with tools like MLFlow.
  • An understanding of the full data science lifecycle and an ability to make trade-off decisions around key concepts such as sampling, cross-validation, model evaluation metrics, and feature engineering.
  • Experience working in a professional software development environment, such as appropriate use of Git, code reviews, code packaging, and orchestration of jobs.
  • Strong technical communication skills and the ability to present data science work to business or highly technical stakeholders. You should see the value in technical documentation.
  • Project management skills: you understand how to scope modelling projects and have experience working in an Agile environment.

Preferred team values:

  • A demonstrated ability to innovate and think creatively to solve complex technical puzzles.
  • Persistence and intellectual curiosity to ensure that not only is work complete, but the problem at hand is truly solved.
  • A proactive attitude in solving problems, including reaching out to stakeholders when necessary, asking for reviews or brainstorming sessions with your team, and suggesting new ideas to solve existing problems.
