As our Health, Safety & Wellbeing Lead, you play a pivotal role in shaping a proactive, globally aligned approach to embedding health, safety and wellbeing into how our business line delivers projects. You ensure safe, consistent and high-quality delivery at scale across all regions. In this role, you influence leadership, strengthen safety outcomes, and ensure our global engineering and consultancy projects integrate health & safety into every stage of design and delivery.

What you will do as health & safety lead?

The Business Line HS&W Lead is responsible for embedding a proactive, people-centred Health, Safety and Wellbeing culture across the business line. The role supports operational leaders in delivering safe, sustainable and compliant project execution across engineering, design, environmental consulting, and site-based supervision activities. As an integral part of the business line, this role ensures that safety, quality and wellbeing are embedded into standards, processes and ways of working from the outset, rather than applied retrospectively.

You act as a trusted advisor and influencer, championing continuous improvement and ensuring that HS&W performance aligns with global standards and client expectations.

Operational HS&W Management

  • Oversee implementation of HS&W policies, procedures, and risk management frameworks within projects and offices.
  • Support project teams in hazard identification, risk assessments, and development of safe work methods.
  • Provide subject-matter support for complex field, environmental, and construction supervision activities.
  • Ensure lessons learned and best practices are captured, shared, and embedded.
  • Drive consistent application of HS&W standards across regions, ensuring alignment to a common delivery approach.

Assurance, Compliance & Governance

  • Monitor compliance with internal health & safety standards, legal and regulatory requirements across multiple geographies.
  • Lead or support incident investigations, ensuring root-cause analysis and corrective actions.
  • Track and report health & safety performance metrics, trends, and risk indicators, and prepare governance updates for business line leadership and global HS&W committees.
  • Ensure health & safety performance is visible and linked to overall project performance, supporting continuous improvement across margin, quality and delivery outcomes.

Stakeholder Engagement & Collaboration

  • Act as the primary HS&W partner for the business line, supporting leaders, project managers, and field staff.
  • Coordinate with global and regional HS&W teams to ensure consistency and knowledge sharing.
  • Act as a key partner to the Technical Director in embedding HS&W into the broader technical delivery agenda.

Wellbeing & Psychological Safety

  • Promote wellbeing initiatives relevant to high-pressure project delivery environments.
  • Support managers in identifying and responding to wellbeing concerns within teams.
  • Integrate mental health considerations into HS&W planning and risk assessments.

Capability Building

  • Develop and deliver HS&W training and coaching for leaders, project managers, and site teams.
  • Enhance competence in safety leadership, hazard awareness, incident reporting, and wellbeing.
  • Support onboarding processes to ensure new employees understand HS&W expectations.
  • Build capability to ensure HS&W is proactively integrated into project delivery, not treated as a separate activity.

Where you will work

At Haskoning, you will join an independent, employee-owned international consultancy that combines engineering, design, and consultancy services with software and technology.

We offer purpose-driven and challenging work in diverse international projects. The Water & Maritime Business Line comprises over 2,200 colleagues located globally. Its solutions in Water Technology, Climate Resilience, Maritime and Renewables are sought by major clients in all regions.

As our new Health, Safety & Wellbeing Lead, you will become part of the Water & Maritime technical and EE30 portfolio development team. The technical team defines and drives how projects are delivered across Water & Maritime, ensuring consistent, high-quality, safe and scalable outcomes globally. It brings together digital, data, technology and knowledge to improve productivity, enable reuse and embed continuous improvement in delivery.

This role reports directly to the Technical Director – Water & Maritime. This role can be based either in the Netherlands or in the UK but requires international travel throughout the year.

What you bring

You bring strong communication and influencing skills, enabling you to engage and guide stakeholders at all levels with clarity and credibility. You are comfortable working with data and translating insights into practical actions. You also bring strong coaching and facilitation skills, allowing you to support and develop others effectively. You thrive in complex, international environments and demonstrate the cultural awareness, adaptability and resilience needed to work across diverse teams. Your emotional intelligence enables you to build trust, navigate challenges and foster a positive and inclusive culture.

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (e.g. Engineering, Environmental Science, Occupational Health & Safety or similar).
  • Proven experience in HS&E, HSE or HS&W roles within engineering, environmental consulting, design, or construction supervision, with a solid understanding of Health & Safety regulations, standards and best practices across multiple jurisdictions.
  • Proven ability to influence leaders and contribute to cultural change, with practical experience supporting field-based or construction-related activities.
  • Strong capability in incident investigation, root cause analysis and risk management.
  • Knowledge of wellbeing principles and frameworks, including psychological safety and their application in high-performance environments.
