Graduation Internship Assignment

Erosion of Artificial Reef Structures

Worldwide, coral reefs are under pressure from climate change and human activities such as fishing, shipping, and coastal development. As a response, artificial reefs are increasingly being deployed to support and restore marine ecosystems. These structures provide habitat for fish, corals, and other sea life, enhance biodiversity, and contribute to coastal protection and the recovery of degraded ecosystems.

Due to constant exposure to flowing water and sediment transport, these structures gradually erode. The erosion rate of such reef structures is a critical factor in determining their lifespan and effectiveness. To better understand and predict this process, NETICS has developed an innovative one-of-a-kind erosion machine. Using cutting edge technology, it allows investigation into the expected durability of artificial reef elements.

To translate laboratory findings into practical applications, further insight is needed into the test methodology, comparable international standards, and the extent to which the processes in the erosion machine reflect real-world marine conditions. In this assignment, you will research this and propose improvements, contributing to underwater nature restoration.

Assignment description

In this project, you will assess the functioning of the erosion machine and evaluate its suitability as a predictive tool for erosion in marine environments. You will perform lab tests, optimize the current lifespan calculation model, and improve the erosion machine based on your recommendations.

  • Explore existing erosion test methods and compare them with the NETICS erosion machine.
  • Perform lab tests to evaluate the test setup in terms of scaling, realism, and reproducibility of marine conditions (flow velocity, sediment types, salinity, etc.).
  • Assess the current lifespan calculation model and make improvements.
  • Validate previous test results.
  • Optimize the test method, for instance by adjusting physical components of the machine, varying flow conditions, or using alternative sediment types.

What we are looking for

  • Enthusiastic master’s student with a background in hydraulic engineering, mechanical engineering, or a similar field.
  • Interest in ecological restoration and experimental research.
  • Able to work independently and take initiative.
  • Start date from August 2025 onwards; this is flexible.

Who we are

NETICS is a leading R&D, consultancy, and engineering firm specialized in the high-value reuse of dredged sediments and other residual flows. The projects are innovative, sustainable, and directly contribute to the circular economy and ecological development. From the office in Alblasserdam, the multidisciplinary team works on practical solutions to complex challenges in hydraulic engineering.

NETICS is the inventor and patent holder of GEOWALL, a technology that produces circular building blocks from dredged material. The company also operates a unique in-house laboratory where daily research is conducted on the strength, durability, and erosion resistance of its products.

What we offer

A challenging yet practical graduation assignment with direct ecological impact.

  • Behind-the-scenes access to innovative material research.
  • Professional guidance within a small and experienced team.
  • Flexible working environment from the office and lab in Alblasserdam and remote.
  • Internship compensation including travel cost.
  • The opportunity to make a meaningful impact on the future of coral reef restoration.

NETICS is an innovative engineering company which is internationally known for its unique expertise in the field of 'building with dredged sediments'. By locally reusing the dredged material, construction costs, the use of raw materials and CO2 emissions can be lowered significantly. The company has yearly been awarded with a high notation in the SME innovation top 100. We are working with a dedicated team of engineers on projects all over the world.
