SLAM Ortho develops sensor technology to support trauma surgeons while operating on patients with fractures during osteosynthesis procedures. For these procedures it is important to place the right length screw implant. Currently, this is a separate measurement step that is often inaccurate, resulting in the wrong implant being selected. For example, patients with broken wrists have a 10% chance to experience complications after a procedure. The sensor technology of SLAM Ortho gathers data during drilling in bone and immediately informs trauma surgeons of the correct implant length. This means shorter OR durations, improved surgeon workflow and better patient outcomes.

SLAM Ortho is currently performing the first in-patient study together with ErasmusMC in Rotterdam. The sterile sensor technology is being used for the first time in the real world, where technical innovation meets the clinic.

What will you do

We are looking for a Clinical Technology intern to support executing this study. You will be actively involved in transferring technical innovation to actual use of novel devices in the OR. You will be involved in:

  • Creating a deep understanding of how surgeons operate and assessing what types of surgeries and instruments need to be compatible with the device
  • Supporting the development team with fully understanding the hospital logistics and integrating the device so it fits the logistics and sterilization cycle and can be used in the OR
  • Training surgeons in using the device
  • Observing procedures with the device to see if everything runs smoothly and assisting if needed
  • Performing surveys, gathering data for the study, and translating the requirements of the OR teams back to the engineers so the technology can be improved

Who we are looking for

  • BSc./MSc. student in Technical Medicine or a related field
  • Combination of an academic mindset with a hands-on mentality
  • Self-reliant and driven personality that takes the initiative
  • Likes to work full-time on this project
