Research internship R&D - Gear pump efficiency

At VMI, you will work on a research internship within R&D focused on gear pump efficiency.

VMI uses many extruders to make rubber components for the tire industry. A crucial component in the system is the gear pump, a mechanical pump used to transfer a rubber compound under temperature and pressure. During its lifetime, the efficiency of the gear pump decreases, which can affect the overall performance of the extruder.

We are looking for an intern who will develop a software tool that can predict the decrease of the efficiency during production.

You will test the software tool on different types of extruders and at different speeds, temperatures, and with different compounds.

Introduction

VMI R&D offers an enthusiastic and inspiring working environment with many facilities for testing and collecting data.

You will be working in the R&D Extrusion Cutters & Flexx department with 23 colleagues. This group consists of 9 Mechanical Engineers, 8 Control Engineers, 2 Electrical Engineers, a Release Engineer, 2 Technical Projectleaders and a trainee.

VMI R&D has a workshop to do software tests on existing types of extruders.

What are you going to do?

You will work on the following tasks: (can be revised in consultation with you)

• Measurement of actual efficiency in gear pumps
• Determine which parameters has to be measured.
• Description of functionality
• Software development
• Testing on the machines at VMI

Who are you?

• A Bachelor or Master student software engineering, electrical engineering or a similar field.
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to work independently.
• You are looking for an internship from September or February.
• You are available for at least 5 months, for 32 to 40 hours per week. It is possible to work on the assignment partly from home.
