How you can make a difference

Help shape the technology driving one of the Netherlands’ most trusted brands. As our new Senior Backend Engineer (Kotlin/Java, Kafka, DevOps), you’ll build and run applications that keep our supply chain efficient, compliant, and future-ready. Working at the intersection of engineering, sustainability, and business, you’ll have the chance to influence how millions of products move through our network while ensuring innovation, reliability, and impact at scale.

  • You get to work with modern technologies and new-build solutions.
  • Everything we build is scalable, using Azure, microservices, Kubernetes, CI/CD pipelines, and Kafka. We work in small increments so we’re able to put things live straight away, reducing time to market.
  • We work in a multidisciplinary team that contributes and removes obstacles.

This is how you will reinvent food retail.

  • Build and scale microservices in Kotlin for our Transport Planning team, powering smarter supply chain operations.
  • Design and deliver technical solutions that align with our architecture and business processes.
  • Hands-on development: create proofs of concept, write clean code, implement automated testing, ensure security and code quality, and set best practices.
  • Contribute to standards: shape and evolve our technical guidelines for long-term scalability.
  • Collaborate and share: bring your expertise to cross-team initiatives within the AH Stores and Supply Chain Technology Platform.
  • Enable growth: improve team skills and processes to deliver business value faster and more effectively.

As a Senior Engineer in AH Transport Planning, you work at the heart of the Albert Heijn supply chain. The AH Transport Planning product is responsible for planning and managing more than 3000 daily trips for Albert Heijn stores and warehouses.

You will be supported by a team, allowing you to focus on building code. You will start with the development of mature systems with continuous change demand. We are taking future-changing steps to innovate our architecture and become more responsive toward market changes and opportunities.

Considering the vast scale we operate at, even the most minor improvements make an enormous impact, and you will be at the epicenter working on solutions that will take our supply chain to the next level.

Your new team and office.

Together with your team you will work on inspiring projects to accelerate our transition into a hybrid Food & Tech company. We want to leverage data and technology to future-proof food shopping and give our customers access to healthy food more easily. At Albert Heijn, you team up with inspiring peers in the data, digital, and tech domains. Our teams work in a hybrid way: both from home and in the office.

Don’t check all the boxes? Don’t worry, we probably don’t either 😉.

What we offer.

  • A minimum of 20 days paid vacation, optionally 12.5 days extra.

The recipe for maximum impact

  • 10+ years of experience as a Backend Developer.
  • You know your technology stack: you are the expert when it comes to Kotlin (Java), MongoDB, Docker, Kubernetes, and Kafka.
  • Experience in Cloud, preferably Azure, but we will get you up to speed if you have AWS or Google experience.
  • Experience leading or mentoring other backend developers, preferably in a microservice landscape for an internet-facing app.
  • Know your way around CI/CD, including test automation integrations and release engineering automation. We use Azure DevOps and GitHub Actions.
  • Strong understanding of concepts like code quality, IT security, test automation, and cloud practices.
