How do you make our customers happy?

Bol is transforming retail to make daily life easier for 13 million customers. Together with 49,000 partners on our retail tech platform, we offer a selection of more than 38 million articles. Every day, we work to make shopping and selling simpler, smarter, and more enjoyable—powered by innovation, collaboration, and a strong customer‑centric mindset. Want to be part of that journey? Welcome aboard!

The biggest challenge

Simplicity and high impact through boundary design, reliability, focused innovation and continuous improvement. Can you coach resilient teams to step by step improve the Marketing & Advertising eco-system, making it simpler and more impactful every day?

You’ll help build teams with high quality standards and reliability as second nature, so they can focus on innovation and continuous improvement, and who enjoy collaborating cross-functionally both inside and outside the area.

We’re looking for someone who, together with the teams and their environment, can form a vision and translate that into a clear path towards a healthy, trustworthy set of capabilities with clear APIs.

The Advertising Domain

Advertising through bol.com (AvB) is one of bol’s key priorities for 2026 and beyond. Since 2022, the innovation teams have grown from 30 to approximately 100 people. This growth presents challenges and opportunities, such as maintaining the right culture, onboarding, and delivery-related topics like continuous improvement and SRE. The speed of growth and maturity of the domain requires you to balance future-proof solutions with pragmatic first steps. As a tech leader, you motivate and develop your engineers and teams and work on horizontal topics such as bounded contexts, boundary APIs, AI coding effectiveness, cloud, SRE, or recruitment for the entire domain.

What you'll do as Engineering Manager

As (Senior) Engineering Manager, you’ll lead two high-impact teams within the Marketing & Advertising area.

You’ll be the Engineering Manager for 12-16 engineers and report to a Head of Engineering. Together with 8 other Engineering Managers and the Head of Engineering you’ll form the Engineering leadership team.

You’ll own the full engineering lifecycle, from discovery and delivery to operations and continuous improvement. Your technical leadership will help steer architecture and process, while your people leadership will elevate individual growth and team cohesion. You’ll also work closely with the Group Product Manager to shape the roadmap and align it with bol’s strategic ambitions.

Beyond team delivery, you’ll:

  • Drive engineering quality, resilience, and best practices
  • Support hiring and team composition, attracting top-tier talent
  • Use data and metrics to foster a culture of performance and growth
  • Champion collaboration within tech and between tech and business
  • Manage budgets for tech services, cloud infrastructure, and tooling
  • Mitigate technical and compliance risks

Key qualifications

  • Relevant software engineering/architecture experience
  • >5 years of technical leadership/management experience
  • Strong coaching and mentoring abilities, for both individuals and teams
  • Proven ability to foster a strong engineering culture, embedding continuous improvement
  • Track record of driving engineering excellence and cross-functional collaboration
  • Leader who can transform and improve their own scope as well as teams around them; not afraid to challenge the status quo and engage in constructive conflict to improve the whole

3 reasons why this is (not) for you

  • Comfort Zone Seeker You’d rather stay with the familiar than help shape what’s next.
  • Solo Operator You prefer working independently over aligning and collaborating across multiple teams and domains.
  • Maintenance Mindset You're more comfortable optimizing what's already there than building systems that need to scale fast and evolve constantly.
  • Empathetic Leader You build high-performing teams that feel safe, supported, and stretched.
  • Engineering Strategist You connect dots—from architecture to business value—with clarity and conviction, using your engineering background to lead the way for the teams.
  • Change Embracer You thrive in dynamic environments and guide teams through ambiguity with confidence.

Where you'll land

At the leading e-commerce tech platform in the Netherlands and Belgium. Bol is where 13 million customers shop and 49,000 partners sell. Our Partner Journey domain is central to this ecosystem—and always evolving. Here, you’ll work alongside over 2,900 colleagues united by one belief: there’s always a better way. Let’s build it—together.

Perks of having a blue heart

Flexible working

We bring the best of both worlds together by working 50% at the office and 50% at home. This way, we find a balance between organisational and individual needs.

On and off

At bol we understand like no other that you have to take care of yourself first, then your environment and then bol. In that order. Therefore, everyone at bol receives 29 days of vacation.

The culture and the office

Our colleagues work hard to make the daily lives of our customers easier and more fun. But of course, we do this in an inspiring and creative environment!

Bij bol leveren onze collega’s een unieke bijdrage om het dagelijks leven makkelijker te maken.
