Who is Lightyear?

Lightyear is an innovative and progressive scale-up with one mission; offering clean and affordable mobility for everyone, everywhere! Lightyear originated from the multiple world champion of the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge® Cruiser Class, Solar Team Eindhoven. With Stella and Stella Lux they have developed a solar powered, 4 person, road legal car. Lightyear was officially established in 2016 and started to make this groundbreaking technology accessible to everyone! In 2016 they started with 5 visionaries, at the beginning of 2018 Lightyear has grown to 40 enthusiasts. Meanwhile, in mid-2019, Lightyear consists of nearly 150 employees and we are still growing. Lightyear has its own production facility and a new office is to be delivered in the summer of 2019. This growth will continue in the coming years. For that reason we are looking for talent and experience to strengthen ourselves and to contribute in achieving our mission!

What will you do as Packaging Engineer (Supply Chain)?

Until the start of production (2020) the packaging engineer needs to develop efficient and smart returnable packaging and/or tooling. For example our solar roof, chassis, battery pack or different smaller but critical parts of Lightyear One. You will determine what is needed, find relevant partners and set up a return pool process. You are going to work together with engineering, procurement and the quality department to find the best possible solutions. Once that is up and running, the return pool process needs to be monitored (expectations are that increasing amounts are needed), existing packaging needs to be modified due to updates/changes of the different parts. Your job will consist of but is not limited to:

  • Develop smart returnable packaging together with suppliers to ensure safe and efficient handling of complex and often expensive car parts from suppliers to our production line (and back). For all high risk and/or difficult to handle parts packaging tooling needs to be developed. This in a way that risks of damaging the parts are reduced to a minimum and that it also takes a minimum of space to transport and store them.
  • Create innovative concepts that cater to sustainability within the organization. For example modern electronic T&T systems, new materials, foldability, optimization with 'best value for money' in the back of your mind continuously.
  • Integration of the packaging and tooling into the (future) assembly line and the connection of the tools into a limited working area will require innovation
  • Set up a retour pool for the returnable packaging which ensures a clear visibility of where they are and determine how much we need, which can be used from suppliers until our production line
  • Find a suitable partner(s) (together with procurement) for the development of the packaging and/or tooling
  • Create concept sketches of possible solutions and cascade these to the relevant stakeholders/ partners.

What do we expect from a Packaging Engineer (Supply Chain) at Lightyear?

To succeed in the dynamic world of Lightyear, pro-activity, professionalism, communication and adaptability are crucial. In addition, we are looking for someone with an ambitious attitude who learns from the past (tried and tested) but who is especially open to transforming new developments or ideas into the "tried and tested" of the future! You are also someone with a high sense of responsibility and a cooperative attitude. You like short lines of communication within the company. But nevertheless you are very independent in your role. You have good communication skills, you are a self starter with a ‘can do’ mentality. You can create/build from scratch, you are committed, quality minded and creative. Furthermore you'll bring:

  • A Bachelor Degree in Mechanical Engineering or any related technical domain
  • At least 3 years of experience in a similar role within packaging and/ or tooling
  • Experience in 'returnable' concepts in a previous or current position
  • An interest and affinity with supply chain/ logistics
  • You have a pragmatic attitude
  • Knowledge of CATIA V5/V6 or other high end CAD software is a big plus (Pro Engineer, NX Unigraphics)
  • Knowledge of ERP systems, preferably INFOR LN is a plus
  • You are a someone with a flexible, agile attitude and good communication skills. You are fluent in Dutch and English.
  • Availability for 40 hours a week

What can you expect from Lightyear?

In addition to a challenging role as Packaging Engineer (Supply Chain), you also have the opportunity to work for a company with a real, honest and ambitious mission. This way you have the opportunity to make a huge impact on the future of mobility! In addition, we also offer:

  • A high degree of freedom and independence in your role
  • A role within a multidisciplinary team consisting of highly motivated, inquisitive and talented people with a broad diversity of experience
  • A role at one of the fastest growing technical companies in the Netherlands with accompanying opportunities
  • 40 vacation days a year. (based on full-time employment)
  • Excellent travel allowance that encourages the use of public transport
  • An interesting and balanced pension through Zwitserleven that is in line with the mission of Lightyear
  • The ability to participate via shares and to be involved in the growth and success of Lightyear
  • In addition to a dynamic working environment, there is time for relaxation during our already epic Friday afternoon drinks

At Lightyear we are building an electric car that charges itself. From our experience at Solar Team Eindhoven, we know this is only possible starting from scratch. At Lightyear we bring together a multidisciplinary team of highly motivated engineers, designers, and visionaries to challenge the status quo. Write the story with us!
