How do Fidelity’s Fixed Income team create a repeatable competitive advantage? Here’s your chance to spend the summer finding out.

What do we do?

Our Fixed Income team manages debt securities in a range of funds covering investment grade, high yield, emerging market debt, hybrids and money markets.

Research

Our skilled specialist researchers identify investment opportunities and have a strong link with colleagues in Equity Research.

Building models

The business model allows you to quickly and accurately forecast the value drivers of a bond or gilt and calculate valuation metrics. It also helps others to understand the investment opportunity and its outlook.

Make recommendations

Robust research-driven analysis gives us the information needed to make buy or sell recommendations on holdings to generate strong risk-adjusted returns.

What will I be doing?

Over the course of an 8-week programme, you’ll prepare investment reports and attend portfolio strategy meetings. If you show promise and improvement over the course of the summer, you could be offered a place on our graduate programme.

Work on live projects

You’ll work with junior and senior team members to see how we use collaborative working and deeper insights into risk to get the most complete picture of an investment.

Attend meetings

You’ll get to go to portfolio strategy meetings and learn directly from senior managers.

Understand financial modelling

We’ll train you up on financial modelling, research, risk exposure and the commercial aspects of fixed income products.

What we look for

We look for intelligent, quick-thinking students with a keen interest in the industry. For that reason, we take on people from all degree disciplines.

Flair for numbers

It’s important that you have an interest in analysing both quantitative and qualitative data. Good attention to detail is needed to spot the nuances in data.

Independent thinker

Although you will have support, you will also have a lot of autonomy on this programme. You need to be comfortable working both independently and with others.

Personal drive

You will only do as well as the effort you put in. Getting things wrong is a part of your development, you just need to be able to learn from mistakes and push yourself forwards.

Penultimate year

You will need a minimum of ABB (or equivalent) at A-Level, and on track for a minimum 2:1 degree classification.

Testimonials

"Fixed Income is a relatively small department so there’s more of a family atmosphere. For example, we have the morning call where analysts and traders jump on the microphone to highlight any key information to the floor."

Ranjeev, Fixed Income Investment Graduate

"I find the financial instruments we invest in very interesting so the work is intellectually stimulating. From my very first week, I was given work that had a genuine impact on the investment process."

Matthew, Fixed Income Investment Graduate

Learning & Development

You will be highly valued here and your development is heavily invested in from day one and throughout your programme.

Application process

We like well-rounded applicants, which is why we will ask you questions that will highlight your personality and potential, rather than just numerical capabilities.

Before applying, check out our top tips for how you can add value via our interview process.

We’ve worked hard to ensure our new process is fast and efficient. That means our application deadline is not about just ‘getting your foot’ in the door by the 31st December, you need to apply, pass the on-line assessments and submit your video-interview by the 31st December as well.

Apply Online

We value the different ways that people think. The best way to explore that is to hear from you. Our initial online application form is a quick and easy process designed to take as little time as possible, so you can get on to the immersive testing and interview stages - where you can really show who you are.

You will need to:

  • provide an optional one-page cover letter
  • provide an up to date CV

*Please note if you are currently on a Tier 4 student visa, this means you have the right to work in the UK

Online strengths assessment

Here you will be asked to rank a number of potential responses to some scenarios based on what you are likely to experience at Fidelity. When you submit your application form you will be automatically invited to complete our on-line assessment within 5 days. (Please check you spam/junk mail folder for the invite.)

Video interview

If you’re successful at the online stage, we’ll invite you to do a 30-minute video interview within 5 days. (Please check you spam/junk mail folder for the invite.) You’ll be asked to answer 4-5 strengths-based questions and have 30 seconds to read the question, and up to a minute to give your answer. (If you feel you will need extra time to record your interview, please email us earlycareersatfidelity@fil.com to discuss before launching your video interview.) You’ll be given a practice question before you start so you have time to get used to the format. There isn’t a wrong or right answer, this is a chance for you to show us how you approach answering questions about your strengths and interests.

Strengths-based interview

The next stage of our application process is either a face-to-face or Skype interview, depending on your location. The questions you’ll be asked here are a combination of motivational and strengths-based questions and give us a chance to understand what you enjoy and what areas of the role fuel your enthusiasm. It’s best not to over-prepare for these as we want you to be yourself and feel relaxed. Remember to think about specific examples of when you’ve demonstrated your strengths so that we can get a clear view of who you are a person.

Assessment centre

During the assessment, you will be involved in a mix of exercises and assessments related to the role you are applying to. The day is also a great chance for you to meet different members of the team here at Fidelity and ask any questions you have about the business - this day is as much about you making sure Fidelity is the right place for you as it is about us assessing your strengths.

Offer

Stand out at the assessment centre and we’ll offer you a place on the programme. You’ll have two weeks from the day you receive your offer to make a decision. We can assign you a current graduate as a buddy to help with your decision making. Plus they’ll continue to be on hand to support you throughout your early career at Fidelity.

Fidelity International provides world class investment solutions and retirement expertise to institutions, individuals and their advisers.
