Introduction

This is a (graduation) internship for a bachelor or master student interested in performance measurement and optimization in an embedded environment with an understanding of microprocessor architectures.

Job Mission

ASML is market leader in high end exposure tools for the chip industry. To achieve the high accuracy and strict time to market needs, we developed a very powerful generic (motion) control platform in the past 8 years. In this motion control platform the time critical calculations are currently performed on PowerPC CPU boards (Based on the MPC8548 and P4080 CPU’s), which will not be supported any longer in the near future. In order to achieve hard real-time performance no OS is used and the code is ran on ‘bare metal’. In the future a replacement for these boards has to be found.

One option for this is to use an X86 based CPU module. Since this module has multiple cores it may be possible to use a standard OS like Linux. The OS would have to be adapted or tweaked slightly to allow the time-critical and non-time-critical parts to run on separate cores without interfering.

Job Description

  • Adapt the OS to allow time-critical and non-time-critical parts in parallel on the X86 module;
  • Evaluate the performance of the X86 module compared to our existing CPU’s;
  • Assess the feasibility of using an OS like Linux in such a fashion.

Education

  • You are a Bachelor or Master’s student in Software/Computer engineering;
  • You have an understanding of microprocessor architectures;
  • Interest in performance measurement and optimization in an embedded environment;
  • Work independently and have strong communication skills;
  • Fluent in C programming language;
  • Experience with Python is also preferred.

This is an (graduation) internship with a duration of a minimum of 5 months.

Please keep in mind that we can only consider students (who are enrolled at a school during the whole internship period) for our internships and graduation assignments.

What ASML offers

Your internship will be in one of the leading Dutch corporations, gaining valuable experience in a highly dynamic environment. In addition, you’ll get expert, practical guidance and the chance to work in and experience a dynamic, innovative team environment.

ASML: Be part of progress

We make machines that make chips – the hearts of the devices that keep us informed, entertained and safe; that improve our quality of life and help to tackle the world’s toughest problems.

We build some of the most amazing machines that you will ever see, and the software to run them. Never satisfied, we measure our performance in units that begin with pico or nano.

We believe we can always do better. We believe the winning idea can come from anyone. We love what we do – not because it’s easy, but because it’s hard.

Students: Getting ready for real-world R&D

Pushing technology further is teamwork, and our R&D team is more than 5,500 people strong, with major sites on three continents. Dozens of diverse, interdisciplinary teams work in parallel to meet a challenging development schedule.

In such an environment, your colleagues may be sitting next door, or they could be thousands of kilometers away in a different country, or even working for a different company.

An internship at ASML is your opportunity to get to know this world of industrial-strength R&D and get a feel for that excites you most. Will you design a part of the machine, or make sure it gets built to the tightest possible specifications? Will you write software that drives the system to its best performance, or work side-by-side with the engineers of our customers in a fab, optimizing a system to the requirements of the customer?

How will you be part of progress?

BE PART OF PROGRESS
We make machines that make chips; the hearts of the devices that keep us informed, entertained and safe. Our key technology is the lithography system, which brings together high-tech hardware and advanced software to control the chip manufacturing process. All of the world’s top chipmakers like Samsung, Intel and TSMC use our technology, enabling the waves of innovation that help tackle the world’s toughest challenges.
