Job Purpose/Overview

As an empoyee of Scientific & Regulatory Affairs, the Senior Regulatory Specialist Netherlands performs a variety of regulatory activities related to raw materials, finished products, product registration, labelling, claims, packaging, and regulatory database management to ensure compliance with applicable food and other product-related laws and regulations in accordance with internal processes and within assigned countries and areas of responsibility. The jobholder supports the Netherlands and Poland as Activation Markets in the region. They lead the external influencing activities related to the external regulatory affairs in the Netherlands. This position proactively identifies potential regulatory problems, and takes action, as appropriate, to minimize or eliminate such problems and performs other duties to assist in creating a positive scientific and regulatory environment for our products and business goals. Senior Specialist Scientific and Regulatory Affairs Europe, Netherlands also works on innovation and other external projects to address and resolve regulatory issues that impact our products as well as to materialize opportunities to support our growth plans.

Key Responsibilities

  • Has responsibility for assuring ingredients, formulas, labelling, and packaging are in full compliance with laws and regulations as well as internal standards and policies in assigned markets;
  • Has responsibility for assuring claims are in full compliance with laws and regulations as well as internal standards and policies in assigned markets;
  • Executes the external regulatory influencing strategy related to the Netherlands in a proactive manner. Works with internal partners to understand priorities and impacts of developing legislation and aligns appropriate external positions. Works with external partners to shape developing policy and legislation in line with our aligned positions;
  • Proactively monitors regulatory developments and activities in assigned markets; determines current and expected regulatory status of (new) ingredients and additives; researches interpretations regarding the safety and acceptability of products and ingredients, and assures that databases are up to date and contain the best current information; works internally (including with cross-segment Mars partners) and externally to address and influence proposed regulations to preserve Mar’s freedom to operate;
  • Participates on project teams, anticipates regulatory issues and works with legal counsel, consultants, suppliers, and trade associations and other external partners to clarify and resolve these issues. Provides strategic Scientific and Regulatory Affairs advice to the Netherlands and Polish businesses as Activation Markets; takes leadership to materialise opportunities to support our growth plans.
  • Represents the company externally in trade organizations to address industry issues and ensure company positions are communicated;
  • Leads projects, and assists on more complex projects, some with global scope and impact.

Context and Scope

A Senior Regulatory Specialist Netherlands applies technical, organizational, and project managerial skills broadly to provide guidance to R&D project teams, Corporate Affairs, Marketing and other internal partners on regulatory matters, recommends options and implements solutions to resolve problems so the product can be brought to market on a timely and cost-efficient basis. The jobholder works with a moderate level of independence, based on regulatory knowledge and experience in assigned markets, to manage complex SRA challenges, provide reasoned and business relevant solutions, and risk assessments. Regulatory compliance of our products in the market place can be impacted if internal compliance and approval processes are not followed; this could have financial implications to the company if products have to be recalled or if fines are incurred if incumbent duties are not executed flawlessly. The Senior Regulatory Specialist also represents Mars and actively participates in external activities as a member of industry association.

Job Specifications/Qualifications

1. Education & Professional Qualification

  • Minimum: A Bachelor’s degree in a technical area, such as nutrition, food science, biology, chemistry or pharmacology.

  • Preferred: A Master’s degree in a technical area, such as nutrition, food science, biology, chemistry or pharmacology, or in food law

2. Knowledge/Experience

  • Minimum of 4-7 years of experience in regulatory affairs with food products, preferably with focus on Europe. This includes excellent knowledge on European food legislation.

  • Experience working with trade associations and government agencies to clarify and resolve regulatory matters is preferred.
