Cities are fundamentally economic in nature and exist for the purposes of trade and commerce. For this reason, Economics is a core specialism within BuroHappold’s Cities business.

Our key interest is in promoting the most sustainable, value-adding forms of economic activity across a diversity of urban areas, of different scales and in numerous locations. We work at all scales, from regions, to city districts, to individual real estate developments and infrastructure components.

Working across a range of exciting projects in the UK and beyond, this is a fantastic opportunity to showcase your technical expertise and leverage your interpersonal skills in maintaining and developing relationships with clients.

Responsibilities and Accountability

Finance

  • Revenue targets agreed /aligned to strategies

Reporting

  • Report directly to the Group Director of the Cities Strategies and Plans Group
  • Part of the London Leadership team within Cities Strategies and Plans.

Planning and Operations

  • Responsibility for direction and oversight (including quality assurance) of significant economic development consultancy projects
  • Play a key role in building and expanding our offer in alignment with our business strategy to suit BuroHappold’s target markets and sectors
  • Responsibility for achieving and surpassing quality standards associated with consultancy assignments and improving overall quality of client outputs where possible
  • Demonstrate exceptional project leadership, whilst developing a wider portfolio of key client relationships and maintain existing clients and collaborators
  • Maintain and build team capability to run integrated, high profile Consulting projects
  • Undertake targeted business development and marketing activity, promoting the BuroHappold offer including liaison and partnership with other key individuals across the firm
  • Interface with BuroHappold teams in covering Urban Development, Sport, Culture, Higher Education and Culture to develop an integrated high value offer
  • Maintain an accurate picture of current and future market trends and have the agility to respond to evolving markets
  • Acting (as required) as a spokesperson for BuroHappold Cities across various platforms and media and helping to promote the firm’s view in relation to cities and infrastructure.

Skills and Qualifications

Required Skills

  • Extensive consulting experience in the fields of strategic consulting, economic development consulting or real estate consulting
  • Demonstrate a track record in acting in an advisory/consulting capacity in relation to urban development projects for high profile public and private sector clients
  • Have significant experience of preparing strategies and plans in connection with urban development including economic and financial appraisal of projects
  • Be a proven work winner and effective business builder and good networks with public and private sector clients
  • Demonstrate an ability to have developed strong trusted advisor relationships with key clients
  • Have significant experience of team and project leadership inspiring, mentoring and leading high performing teams
  • Have a proven record in developing and maintaining relationships with a variety of non-client stakeholders, internally and externally
  • Demonstrate an understanding of urban/city challenges and the value of providing an integrated offer

Beneficial Skills

  • Speciality sector experience in one or more relevant sectors such as urban regeneration, mixed use development, sport and leisure, culture, tourism/hospitality, economic development
  • Have international consulting experience and willingness to travel regularly commensurate with the international focus of BuroHappold’s portfolio
  • Demonstrate strong cultural awareness to operate across a wide range of geographies; aligned to the international spread of the current client base
  • A reputation in the sector evidenced through external networks, work winning and thought leadership activities.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 2:1 honours degree in Economics or a related subject (where Economics comprises a significant component) from an internationally recognised university
  • Postgraduate degree in a subject area related to Economics and/or Urban Development (or where Economics comprises a significant component).
