The group of Dr. Tomáš Šolomek in the van’t Hoff Institute for Molecular Sciences (HIMS) at the University of Amsterdam is looking for candidates to fill a position for a postdoctoral researcher in the synthesis of conjugated functional polymers.

What are you going to do

  • You will contribute to our research by developing the synthesis of a new type of conducting polymers and by characterizing their properties. Thereby, you will be responsible for establishing a new line of research in the group by providing the know-how in the synthesis of conjugated polymers;
  • You will synthesize the required monomers and their co-polymers with an unusual structure;
  • You will use transition metal catalysed cross-coupling reactions to accomplish the project;
  • You will analyse the structure and properties of the formed co-polymers;
  • You will compose reports, discuss and present your results, and collect them into scientific publications;
  • You will be able to contribute to research of other group members and to write grant applications.

What do we require

  • A recent PhD degree holder in the synthesis of conjugated polymers with an excellent track record (research, graduation with honors, etc.);
  • Prior hands-on laboratory experience with the synthesis and in-depth characterization of aromatic monomers and related conjugated polymers are critical to conduct the research project successfully;
  • The candidate has a robust foundation in investigating the structure and properties of conjugated polymers with the following analytical methods: NMR, size exclusion chromatography, mass spectrometry, DOSY, IR, and UV-Vis spectroscopies, light scattering, AFM, or EPR;
  • Experience with doping of conjugated polymers is highly beneficial;
  • We appreciate a critical and proactive problem solver who is not afraid of experimental and interdisciplinary challenges;
  • Collaboration and effective communication, both oral and written, in English are crucial for success in our dynamic team.

Our offer

A temporary contract for 38 hours per week, preferably starting as soon as possible, but latest on the 1st of December 2024, for the duration of 12 months. An extention may be possible based on available funding combined with adequate performance. The gross monthly salary, based on 38 hours per week and dependent on relevant experience, ranges between € 3,345 - € 5,278 (scale 10). This does not include 8% holiday allowance and 8,3% year-end allowance. The UFO profile Researcher 4 is applicable. A favourable tax agreement, the ‘30% ruling’, may apply to non-Dutch applicants. The Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities is applicable.

Besides the salary and a vibrant and challenging environment at Science Park we offer you multiple fringe benefits:

  • 232 holiday hours per year (based on fulltime) and extra holidays between Christmas and 1 January;
  • multiple courses to follow from our Teaching and Learning Centre;
  • multiple courses on topics such as leadership for academic staff;
  • multiple courses on topics such as time management, handling stress and an online learning platform with 100+ different courses;
  • 7 weeks birth leave (partner leave) with 100% salary;
  • partly paid parental leave;
  • the possibility to set up a workplace at home;
  • a pension at ABP for which UvA pays two third part of the contribution;
