Description of the job

Location: Stevenage, UK

Duration: 12 months

Today’s space missions rely on complex on-board embedded software to manage spacecraft subsystems and equipments. This software provides the on-board intelligence needed to fulfil mission objectives and it is imperative that it is developed using proven tools and processes. Airbus Defence and Space at Stevenage has several ongoing spacecraft projects at present, at varying stages of development. The final customer in most cases is the European Space Agency (ESA) and current projects include Solar Orbiter and ExoMars Rover.

The department in which the intern will be working (Engineering Quality UK – TOQES6) is responsible for ensuring that the required processes have been followed in the specification, design, development and test of spacecraft on-board software (and firmware) for Stevenage-based projects, thereby ensuring that the final deliverables are of the required quality. The department has a broader remit outside of the software domain, currently encompassing quality assurance support to a number of mechanical products deployed on space missions.

Tasks & accountabilities

As an intern working within TOQES6 you will work on an allocated project (or projects) under the guidance and direction of an experienced software quality engineer. Working with the project stakeholders as appropriate, your activities will include:

  • Ensuring that spacecraft software project processes are performed according to the current plans and the applicable standards.
  • Maintaining the project Software Quality Assurance Plan.
  • Supporting the assessment throughout the project of the Software Processes and the quality of the Software Project items (for example through inspections and production of metrics).
  • Maintaining and further improving a tool (Enterprise Architect) currently being used to automate some of the tasks performed by software quality engineers. This may require further configuration of the tool, the coding/refining of macros, queries etc.

This job requires an awareness of any potential compliance risks and a commitment to act with integrity, as the foundation for the Company’s success, reputation and sustainable growth.
