Are you an HBO IT student who is looking for a graduation assignment? Are you Interested in visualizing complex information? Are you ambitious to learn what it is like to be an IT expert in a global organization? Then we have the assignment for you!

Your assignment

Investigate, design and realize a prototype to extract data from Canon’s PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) system to be able to visualize the processflows as defined in the system. Finally, you make a proposal how such a solution can be put into production.

Within the PLM system we define, develop and store the specifications for the complicated processes, raw inputs, intermediate results and the end-products for our toners and inks. In this PLM system the data is stored in a pre-described format focused on the main purpose of the system (management of the specifications) . The system itself is not suitable for an optimal visualization of the process-flows. This “view” on the data will help our engineers to have more insight and spot potential errors much quicker than the standard views of the PLM-system.

The idea is to use “Sankey” diagrams (for some examples see https://www.sankey-diagrams.com/tag/mfa/), But that is not a must.

It will be your assignment to

• analyse the systems in place
• talk with future users of the visualizations to gather requirements and insights
• analyse potential solutions: both commercial packages and software libraries.
• create a design how to extract data and process it into a visual representation
• implement a prototype of this
• make a proposal for implementation in our productive PLM system

For this assignment you will cooperate with IT staff responsible for the PLM system, developers of Canon inks and toners, and whoever you need to get your assignment done.

This assignment touches upon many state of the art systems and processes, like Siemens Teamcenter, data analysis in general, visualization of complex processes and puts you square in the middle of the tension between user-requirements and implementation possibilities.

Your profile

• You are currently studying Information Technology or similar on HBO level
• You are interested in creating insight in complex processes through visualization and you are able to handle medium complexity programming challenges.
• As of September 2022, you are available for 4 to 6 months for a minimum of 4 days per week
