About the Role

We are currently looking at a future need to bring a System Design Authority (SDA) into the business. The SDA will report to the Deputy Programme Manager/Engineering Program Manager and is responsible for overseeing, directing and approving the technical baseline of a complex space domain comms system architecture across a number of sites in the UK and around the world. The SDA is responsible and accountable for the overall system baseline and all associated changes to ensure comms services are maintained throughout. They shall identify communications hardware and software interdependencies and resolve conflicts as appropriate at the system of systems level whilst a key stakeholder for approving large scale communications project implementations and roll out. The SDA shall actively support discussions on recommended changes to network architectures and topology as appropriate.

The SDA is consulted, and will provide direction, on the logical and systematic conversion of customer, product or service requirements into total systems solutions that acknowledge technical, schedule, and cost constraints. They SDA shall model and be responsible for the overall system-of-systems logical, functional and physical architectures ensuring any changes are approved and implemented in accordance with the overall engineering rigor and process required.

The SDA will provide technical leadership to a diverse technical team of cross functional engineers and multi contractor teams to ensure successful system/product implementation to deliver import comms services to the end user. Design solutions need to be reviewed and assessed through the internal design review business rhythm to ensure they are robust and include appropriate margins to facilitate safety, performance, producibility and operational availability/supportability.

The selected candidate will ensure program plans and technical baselines are consistent with program control processes, requirements and digital transformation initiatives. They shall ensure identification of lessons experienced and learned, and that corrective actions are initiated and implemented to improve future and ongoing programs.

The successful candidate will establish collaborative relationships across and beyond their own area of responsibility in order to maximise the business’ performance. They will work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary, multi-contractor team and demonstrate initiative. They must also have exceptional written and verbal communication skills with key influencing abilities also.

Required skills, qualifications and experience

  • Outstanding team player, strong technical and leadership skills with the ability to influence and drive change.
  • UK Citizenship; Current SC clearance or ability to achieve.
  • The successful candidate should have experience with systems engineering tools for requirements management, system design, integration and test, system assurance, deployment and transition to operations, system maintenance and upgrade, systems decommissioning as well as disposal activities.
  • Must possess interpersonal skills and be able to function in a multi-contractor environment with the ability to broker conflicting inputs from multiple stakeholders/organisations.
  • Self-motivated and able to work under no supervision with the ability to function effectively in a rapidly changing environment.
  • Cradle to grave requirements management to ensure requirements are met and sold off as per the approved design.
  • Experience in model based system engineering.
