About the Concept team

The Concept team is part of the Innovations Department, which focus is to turn ideas into high-quality products and services. The Concept team works in the beginning of this process and turns ideas into concepts which should work; the outline of the design is defined and the main risks are mitigated. The Concept team consists out of a Manager, three Lead Engineers, a Structural Engineer and a Mechanical Design Engineer.

Background

Ampelmann wants to stand at the forefront of implementing new and innovating technologies into the offshore industry. To underline this ambition, we are now developing fully electrically actuated systems and the first composite offshore gangway! However, working with new technology also comes with new challenges. One of these challenges is to guarantee the structural integrity of a composite gangway in operation offshore. A composite gangway will see operational and accidental loads during its lifetime and in order to ensure safe offshore access a Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) system is proposed. Previous R&D projects have shown the potential of a fiber optic based SHM system that can monitor the structural condition of the composite gangway. However, further research and development is needed before this new technology can be implemented into a composite gangway in operation.

Assignment

Your assignment should cover the following topics:

  • Determine relevant failure mechanisms which need to be monitored
  • Selection of metrics that should be monitored in order to detect relevant failure mechanisms
  • Assessment of optimal sensor types and locations to measure metrics
  • Analysis of important threshold values above which the SHM system should give an alarm

Optional:

  • Coupon tests with sub-scale test panels
  • Implementation of proof of concept SHM system in composite gangway

During this assignment you will work closely with a team of experienced and multidisciplinary engineers within the Innovations Department, but you will also liaise with other internal stakeholders such as Asset Engineers and Reliability Engineers. You will carry out your assignment under supervision of an Engineer from the Concept team.

We ask

  • Background in Mechanical, Maritime or Aerospace Engineering (MSc graduation assignment)
  • Experience in composites, structural engineering and structural health monitoring
  • Accurate, analytical, creative, practical and pro-active MSc student
  • Excellent communication skills in English (required), Dutch (preferred)
  • Availability for 4/5 days a week

You get

  • A nice compensation
  • A laptop with the software needed
  • A great and informal workplace in Delft
  • Fantastic lunch, amazing coffee and fun break facilities (e.g. ping pong, darts)
