The technical role is hugely varied and covers the five key NfP sub-sectors: Social Housing, Charities, Higher Education, Further Education, and Academies. The NfP technical involvement in this role is extremely wide-ranging from carrying out a full technical review of a set of financial statements, delivering sector training or developing bespoke sector specific audit templates.

Here are some things you can expect:

  • Technical advice and expertise. This unique role will require you to provide technical advice and expertise to the audit practice, focussed on responding to financial reporting queries and performing financial statement ‘hot’ reviews. As part of the role, you will be required to support audit teams daily with their technical queries and questions via calls and emails.
  • Making quality second nature. This means doing what’s right even when no one’s looking. The work that you will do has a major impact on our clients and our firm. We pride ourselves on the high-level standards we have for the work that we do.
  • Own your own work. You will invest time to develop and maintain strong financial reporting skills in UK GAAP and the various NfP SORPs across Charities, Education and Social Housing, whilst maintaining a good range of knowledge on broader regulatory and narrative reporting requirements (as relevant to the UK including the main NFP sectors). You’ll keep up to date with the current professional debates surrounding the specialist areas.
  • Delivering high quality guidance and sector resources – You will be responsible for maintaining high quality and accessible on-line resources and templates, including the latest sector developments for audit teams. You will be responsible for the drafting of content for our in-house online repository (OnePlace) and external deliverables for clients/targets and ensuring that it is up to date with the latest information and regulatory developments.
  • Developing training materials and online internal training sessions - You will be responsible for organising our annual sector training. This involves working with colleagues in the audit practice to develop annual training materials including post-training assessments and delivering the content coherently and confidently over MS Teams to audit managers and above. You will also be responsible for liaising with the Business School to register the training into the NfP curriculums and to ensure all the content is available to audit teams on a timely basis.
  • Sector developments - You will be responsible for the development and publication of our sector developments, which are for our clients as well as targets. We produce these for the Charity, Social Housing and Higher Education sectors on an annual basis. This involves collaboration with both colleagues in the audit practice as well as the design team to ensure the content and design is of a high quality, is engaging and relevant for the readers.
  • Weekly Not for Profit Briefing - You will be responsible for preparing a summary of weekly technical briefings, distributed via e-mail, researching, and summarising the key developments in each sector in an easy to read and accessible format.
  • Be a part of a team. Playing an active role in the immediate NfP Technical team as well as the wider national Financial Reporting technical team. You’ll seek regular feedback and identify learning/ development needs in order to develop technical and personal skills. You’ll provide regular feedback to audit teams on quality and support the audit practice on quality and technical development. Contributing to the smooth running of the department, any suggestions for process improvements and implementation will be welcomed.
  • Take responsibility. Always ensuring output is high quality, you will be able to articulate complex accounting concepts simply and persuade others of your views. Highlighting training needs and reviewing technical training that is prepared by the audit practice is key, and you will be willing to present or support presenters on subject matters at internal and external events. There will be the chance to collaborate with other risk managers and technical specialists, quality review teams, ethics, embedded sector specialists and “pockets of excellence” in the audit practice in designated specialist areas to ensure a seamless experience for audit teams
  • Build your brand. Acting as an 'ambassador' of the firm, you must demonstrate knowledge of Grant Thornton products and services as well as sector/industry understanding. Developing contacts (within GT) and sharing knowledge with colleagues in other service lines is also a part of this role.

The minimum criteria

  • You’ll hold a professional accountancy qualification (ACA, CA or ACCA)
  • Previous audit and/or technical experience of working in at least one of the key NfP sectors is essential (Charities, Social Housing and Education)
  • Previous experience of working in a similar technical role within an accountancy practice is highly desirable
  • In depth knowledge of UK GAAP, the sector SORPs (Charities, Housing and Education) and the regulatory frameworks that NfP entities operate in.

Skills to set you apart

Here are a few more skills we are looking for. Don’t worry if you don’t tick every box. It’s important for us to support you in your role and help you to develop along the way.

  • Analytical skills – reviewing financial statements, technical papers and contracts is a key component of the job. You’ll identify issues, trends, relationships and contractions in information which is how we provide insight.
  • Communication skills – a strong ability to articulate and present technical concepts in a clear and understandable way.
  • Team work/collaboration - Working closely alongside others with different skillsets and experience to develop the best solutions to complex questions and issues.
