About the role: Home Based

The Senior Network Engineer is a technical role within a highly skilled & established team of senior engineers. Based at home, the role involves resolving highly complex network / system faults as well as designing and implementing changes on existing customer networks for network improvements. Working across a broad range of network technologies including but not limited to WAN, managed LAN, Firewalls, DNS and Proxy/filtering services.

The successful candidate will be a team player, hardworking, methodical and able to accurately and consistently document their completed works. They must be able to multitask and have a positive “can do” attitude with an effective eye for detail.

Previous experience working in a senior engineer capacity for a service provider is highly desirable.

What you will be doing:

  • Ensure all escalated and Major Incidents are resolved within the West Malling 3rd line operations team
  • Ensure an in-depth understanding is gained of all networks/customers to be able to resolve any major incidents or improvements on their network
  • Identify and liaise, manage any escalated faults with 3rd party suppliers for major incidents or network improvements i.e. Cisco TAC
  • Identify design and implement changes to existing customer networks to improve performance of their services i.e., over the WAN, LAN, or firewalls
  • Problem management following major incidents to identify root cause and to design and implement any required changes or improvements as a result
  • Complete LLD reviews of new customers/projects as part of the operational acceptance process
  • Prioritise network improvement changes according to risk
  • Ensure that the customer and SDM is kept informed of the progress of network improvements and the internal systems are kept updated regularly to reflect
  • Technical reviewer and approver for changes to be presented to CAB
  • Work closely with the Platform Engineering team to improve performance and resiliency on the core and access network platforms, to provide carrier-grade services to our customers.
  • Support our Capita design and project teams on major projects for new customers
  • To provide and update technical documentation and diagrams instructions for existing customers and services
  • Deliver Customer Service Excellence
  • Adhere to strict Service Level Agreements for fault resolutions and service request completions.
  • Provide training, guidance and support to the 2nd / 3rd line Engineers
  • Provide out of hours support via a on call rota as required

What we are looking for:

Essential

  • Must have a minimum of Cisco CCNP qualification
  • Significant experience of operating in a network engineering role having end to end responsibility
  • Experience in network security – eg, Cisco ASA, Juniper, Palo Alto
  • Experience in load balancers – eg F5 BiG IP
  • Excellent overall understanding of IP, MPLS, SDWAN, BGP, OSPF, ISIS, Wireless within a managed service provider environment.
  • Think creatively around problems, creating innovative solutions to ultimately improve customer performance
  • Be able to identify, design, implement and document network improvements
  • Excellent knowledge of network monitoring systems, protocols and techniques.
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Experience of managing major Incidents through to resolution and providing root cause analysis
  • Able to be self-managed, whilst still working as part of a team
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Security Clearance (or ability to achieve)

Desired, knowledge & experience:

  • CCIE or JNCIE qualification
  • Experience supporting Juniper to JNCIP level
  • Experience supporting hosting services (DNS, Proxy Filtering, Firewall Changes, Mail Relays)
  • Experience and/or knowledge of access technologies including SHDSL, ADSL, Wi-Fi
  • ITIL knowledge - Ideally certified to a minimum of Foundation level
  • Knowledge of network design or capacity planning
