Job Description:

We are currently looking for an In-Flight Payload Support Team Leader for a new group being created in Portsmouth to provide payload expertise to the Toulouse-based In Flight Satellite Support (IFSS) team.

Tasks & Accountabilities

The first objective of the In-Flight Payload Support Team Leader is to set-up a facility in Portsmouth to host the 24/7 support activities. This will be done in coordination with the well-established IFSS team in Toulouse and on the model of the existing dedicated facility of the Toulouse Palays’ site: the ‘TSOC’ (Toulouse Satellite Operation Centre).

The objective includes the definition and procurement of the hardware needed, the management of the relationship with UK IM / IM France and with the TSOC and IFSS team to achieve a flawless connection to the TSOC infrastructure and therefore make sure that the IFPS team in Portsmouth has the same level of visibility of the in-orbit operations as the colleagues based in Toulouse’s TSOC.

Being involved with the support to the IFSS team is a new responsibility given to the Payload MSC. This is becoming a necessity as the maintenance of in-orbit operations of the latest generation of the payloads flown by Airbus require a high-level of understanding of the payload architecture, of the payload performance and of the software associated with the configuration and operations of the payload.

With geostationary satellites’ life expectancy exceeding 20 years, the team needs to be able to train new engineers to join the IFPS support rota and also needs to maintain the relevant material to allow for adequate training to be developed and delivered both internally and to our customers. It is the responsibility of the IFPS team leader to define the architecture of the knowledge management system required to successfully deliver this new mission.

Technical Knowledge

  • Knowledge of satellite communication system architecture and solid understanding of equipment fitted to the Satellite Payload (e.g Receivers, Converters, Amplifiers, Waveguides, Processors, and Antennas).
  • Good understanding of RF communication signal design techniques (e.g. modulation, encoding, filtering).
  • Understanding / knowledge of telecommunication satellites operations and/or ground segment operations.
  • Solid theoretical background on digital communications and proven ability to apply the theory to solve practical problems.
  • AIT experience / Telecom payload test experience.

Skills and Attributes

  • Strong team work abilities within a complex multiple stakeholders' environment.
  • Effective analytical skills and interpersonal skills.
  • Effective presentation and communication skills.
  • Very strong Customer Focus.

Qualifications

University degree or equivalent qualification - (Telecommunications, Electronics Engineering, Mathematics, Physics or Software Engineering).

Desirable: specific qualification and relevant experience in the areas of telecom system architecture, RF, microwave or radio communications systems.

This job requires an awareness of any potential compliance risks and a commitment to act with integrity, as the foundation for the Company’s success, reputation and sustainable growth.
