The Freshfields Global Centre provides both business and legal services to the firm. Our services are delivered in a way which supports the global nature of our firm and our clients, enables our fee earners to deliver exceptional service to our clients and to do that in a way which is efficient and effective.

Function Overview

The Group Finance team is responsible for the UK and consolidated Management Accounts and associated reporting; cost variance reporting and management; and the global budget and forecasting processes.

The FP&A team is responsible for the Firms budgeting and forecasting processes and provides guidance and insight on cost accounting, cost control and cost performance. The team supports the Firm’s budget holders and works in partnership with them to produce routine updates on budgetary performance to the Firms Senior Directors.

Role summary/purpose of job

The Senior Management Accountant – FP&A will analyse and understand the global cost base, partnering with budget holders across the Firm to support them in their understanding and management of costs.

This role will introduce and embed cost forecasting and actively lead the global budget process, supported in this delivery by the FP&A Team.

Key responsibilities and deliverables

  • Act as a trusted business partner for budget holders globally, utilising management accounts reporting and chairing monthly meetings to ensure ownership and understanding of costs;
  • Provide detailed analysis to the Group CFO and Head of Group Finance on the global cost base on a monthly basis;
  • Liaise with UK Management Accounts and Regional Finance to investigate large cost variances and ensure adequate explanations are obtained, justified and communicated to all interested parties;
  • Support the Head of Group Finance and Group CFO with insight and ad hoc analysis on costs, budget and forecast;
  • Lead the global cost forecast, working with Business Service budget holders and Global Finance and utilising our Finance Systems to ensure efficiency and accuracy;
  • Facilitate the annual global budget process: contributing to budget timetables and communications; maintaining budget templates; coordinating load of budgets to Workday Adaptive Planning; interrogating budget submissions and providing challenge where appropriate;
  • Work with the Group Management Accounts team to produce accurate and informative reporting on costs, forecast and budget;
  • Actively promote best practice and compliance with accounting procedures and approval processes;
  • Utilise our finance systems 3E and Workday Adaptive Planning to maximise the and efficiency and participate in future phases of the Workday Adaptive Planning project, incorporating planning;
  • Manage the FP&A team, setting appropriate objectives, performing regular reviews and providing constructive and honest feedback. Act as a coach to support them in their professional development. Guidance and support will be provided by the Senior Manager – Group Finance, where required and appropriate.
  • Deputise for the Senior Manager – Group Finance as required.

  • ACA or equivalent;
  • Ability to gain a good overview as well as being prepared to get involved in the detail;
  • Confident when communicating with staff and management at all levels;
  • Numerate, methodical and proactive;
  • Excellent attention to detail;

  • Must be a team player.
