Do you want to help us pioneer in the field of sludge processing? As Witteveen+Bos, we are involved in a project for processing manure/sludge waste as by-product of the water treatment systems at Kingfish Zeeland.

Kingfish Zeeland Company (KFZ) is a new and rapidly expanding land-based marine fish farm specialised in the culture of Yellowtail Kingfish (Seriola lalandi). Kingfish is cultivated in recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) with high recycling of seawater from the Oosterschelde in order to conserve water and energy and contain extensive water treatment systems. The Kingfish Company is a first mover operating at the cutting edge of sustainable, land based, high value marine aquaculture in the EU and the US. Sustainability and respect to our fish and the environment are at the core of Kingfish Zeeland’s values. Their sustainability measures include: no antibiotics or vaccines, running 100% on renewable energy, minimized energy via heat exchangers, operating on sea water, no biological impact from the farm to its natural surroundings and respect for animal welfare.

KFZ is currently expanding its production and will implement a full-scale water treatment system in the near future. Production of manure/sludge is still limited at the moment and local agriculture is currently the outlet for this solid waste. Output to agriculture is uncertain due to increasing volumes of waste production, and changing regulations and legislative frameworks. Additionally, the use of seawater is a challenge for further processing as it implies a relatively high level of salts in the manure, the latter damaging for processing equipment and undesired in agriculture. A new processing pathway is required to ensure suitable processing of the waste stream of the water treatment.

In this internship or graduation project you’ll be busy with uncovering the Dutch legislative framework and designing an implementation strategy for the processing of fish sludge. The work will involve some desk study to determine the legislation relevant for processing of fish sludge. Subsequently a strategy for implementation of processing pathway will be made considering technical and economical feasibility. This includes an analysis of relevant legislation, exploration of corresponding processing routes, determination of feasible sales route based on the composition, quantification of streams and a techno-economical analysis and options for implementation into the new water treatment.

Within Witteveen+Bos you are part of the group Circular Biobased Solutions, which is focused on closing chains using valorization of residual flows, resource recovery and biobased processes. For this internship or graduation project you are based and supervised by Witteveen+Bos, while weekly contacts and feedback from Kingfish Zeeland will be provided.

What we ask

  • A MSc student with a background in environmental technology, wastewater technology or similar;
  • Dutch speaking is a plus;
  • Experience with (fertilizer) legislation is beneficial;
  • Experience with wastewater treatment is beneficial;
  • Starting as soon as possible;
  • You need to be proactive, able to work in a team and work independently.
