At EY, you’ll have the chance to build a career as unique as you are, with the global scale, support, inclusive culture and technology to become the best version of you. And we’re counting on your unique voice and perspective to help EY become even better, too. Join us and build an exceptional experience for yourself, and a better working world for all.

EY’s Enterprise Risk Consulting is an integral part of our Consulting Services business. The Consulting Services business is a dynamic group focused on providing high value, independent and trusted advice to clients. The key to our success is in helping these clients solve difficult business issues by integrating a variety of skills in the area of risk, such as internal audit and internal controls optimization, process transformation, IT, IPO readiness, people and organizational change, ESG Risk and program advisory. Digitization is increasingly important and so are techniques as data analytics and Robotic Process Automation.

The opportunity

Our Enterprise Risk practice is looking for ambitious interns who want to conduct research in a fast-changing area with a focus on risk transformation. You will conduct your research independently in a hybrid setting (combining working from the office and working from home). EY will provide you with a buddy who will provide you with (academical) guidance during your internship. Besides that, he/she will help you with all your practical questions, and, if desirable, helps you identifying opportunities to gain some practical experiences within our team.

Your research will focus on one of the following topics:

Scenario planning and stress testing in Enterprise Risk Management

We, as EY, would like to know how our non-financial services clients could leverage scenario planning & stress testing methodology as applied by the Financial Services sector. Questions to ask include, but are not limited to: Why is stress testing/scenario planning not widely used in industries besides financial services? How could other industries benefit from this, and on what basis? To put it more general: how is risk currently quantified? Qualitative methods will apply to facilitate the research, e.g., by conducting expert interviews.

Governance, Risk & Compliance (GRC)-tool vendors and integration of ESG (Environmental, Social & Governance)

We, as EY, would like to know if GRC-tool providers are integrating ESG in their product solutions. Which one of the providers are active in this field and in what way? This research potentially can be conducted in collaboration with a GRC-tool provider. We would like to combine an academic-perspective (e.g., on the usage of tooling or benefits of GRC tooling) with a practical and hands-on explorative research on the possibilities for GRC-tools. In addition, it can be interesting to explore what exact capabilities users of the tools desire and to identify opportunities for improvement of the tools. Qualitative methods will apply to facilitate this research.

Internal Control (IC) Framework evolution

We, as EY, are interested in the evolvement of IC frameworks over time. Usually we see that once an IC framework is implemented, companies do not actively update the framework periodically, while the organization and its external environment might have changed resulting in new emerging risks that should be taken into account. When this happens a redesign of the framework is needed. We would like to know more about how these frameworks evolve. What are the differences between companies that are continuously investing in IC (annual updates, keep documentation up-to-date, continuously enhancing) and companies that do not act until issues or red flags pop-up? Is this influenced by top-management’s vision towards IC? In other words, is it a “tick-box” exercise or a genuine desire for strong internal control?

Future niche for internal audit (IA): what will IA focus on if/when technology takes over (from a management perspective)?

"Will robots take over the work of auditors?" is a frequently heard question. We are curious if robots will take over low-thinking actions or also strategic thinking in audits, and in what kind of audits? The IA function will remain, but what actions are left for IA? What will robots do (technology) and what will people do? Also, in comparison with finance functions, what parts are automated and what will remain human tasks? What does management see as the future role for internal audit within the company? We, as EY, would like to know how IA can embed technology in its audit approach and methodology and support their organization to effectively respond to emerging risks and opportunities while accelerating its digital revolution? Qualitative methods will apply to facilitate the research, e.g., by conducting expert interviews.

‘In control’ statements in public- and non-public sector: what are the differences? Over the past years we see an increase in 'in control' statements published by both public and non-public organizations. We, as EY, would like to know to what extent these 'in control' statements are similar and if there is any difference between the 'in control' statements of public vs non-public organizations. We would also like to understand what these differences are and what the potential root cause is.
