Job description

The transformation of our energy systems from fossil fuel-based to renable-based systems is calling for innovative solutions to harvest renewable energies at land, at sea and in space. Very flexible floating structures (VFFS) have been proposed to unlock the full potential of offshore floating photovoltaics. VFFS follow the wave elevation and allow for large structural deflections. Ballasting systems can prevent wind and currents from folding the leading edge. However, wrinkling is critical for the solar modules and can lead to structural collapse.

The overall aim of the multi-disciplinary FlexFloat project, which is a joint effort between the Numerical Analysis group at the Delft Institute of Applied Mathematics (DIAM) and the groups Ship and Offshore Structures, and Ship Hydromechanics at the Department of Maritime and Transport Technology (MTT), is to develop efficient VFFS design tools.

The task of this PhD project is to develop mathematical models and efficient computational tools for large deflection and wrinkling simulation of VFFS. Large deflections and wrinkling are geometrically nonlinear effects that require nonlinear fluid-structure interaction (FSI) simulations. The mathematical models and simulation tools shall be developed in the context of Isogeometric Analysis, which is particularly suited for this task.

The consortium has a long tradition in developing numerical simulation tools and is part of the international developer team of the open-source G+Smo (Geometry plus Simulation Modules) library, which forms the basis of this project. The PhD candidate will collaborate with other G+Smo developers as well as with the other members of the FlexFloat team.

Requirements

Basic requirements:

  • A master’s (or master-equivalent) degree in Mathematics, Computational Science and Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English.

Specific requirements:

  • Strong interest and competence in at least one of the following: applied mathematics, numerical analysis, geometric modelling, scientific computing, fluid-structure interaction problems.
  • Good programming skills in Python, Matlab or C++ and the willingness to work in an interdisciplinary team is a must. The PhD candidate is required to learn C++ in his/her first year to be able to work with G+Smo.
  • Experience in Isogeometric Analysis and/or numerical simulations is a bonus.

Doing a PhD at TU Delft requires English proficiency at a certain level to ensure that the candidate is able to communicate and interact well, participate in English-taught Doctoral Education courses, and write scientific articles and a final thesis.

Conditions of employment

Doctoral candidates will be offered a 4-year period of employment in principle, but in the form of 2 employment contracts. An initial 1,5 year contract with an official go/no go progress assessment within 15 months. Followed by an additional contract for the remaining 2,5 years assuming everything goes well and performance requirements are met.

Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, increasing from € 2443 per month in the first year to € 3122 in the fourth year. As a PhD candidate you will be enrolled in the TU Delft Graduate School. The TU Delft Graduate School provides an inspiring research environment with an excellent team of supervisors, academic staff and a mentor. The Doctoral Education Programme is aimed at developing your transferable, discipline-related and research skills.

The TU Delft offers a customisable compensation package, discounts on health insurance and sport memberships, and a monthly work costs contribution. Flexible work schedules can be arranged. For international applicants we offer the Coming to Delft Service and Partner Career Advice to assist you with your relocation.
