In semiconductor lithography systems, the wafers (raw silicon material) need to be pre-aligned by the so-called wafer handler before they enter the scanning stage. This pre-alignment is in X/Y and Rz. However, if the XY alignment can be done by the robot arm that is transferring the wafer, this improves the system in four ways:
⦁ The pre-aligner only needs to align one DOF, so the cost will be reduced
⦁ The risk of (particle) contamination is lower because there are less take-over steps
⦁ The pre-alignment sequence is less complex
⦁ Higher throughput because of simpler sequence
The thesis assignment is to make shift this alignment step to the SCARA robot without changing its hardware. This involves among other things improvement of the settling behavior, a distinction between coarse positioning (long distance) and fine position (near take-over area) and an assessment of the performance limiting criteria such as friction/hysteresis and external disturbances.
