Taking aviation safety to the next level

In 2017, Schiphol airport, air traffic control, airlines, ground handlers and refuelling services started a unique initiative to take the next step in their co-operation on safety. In an integral safety management system (ISMS) they jointly manage the common risks in the aviation operations at Schiphol. This is without precedent in aviation. Examples of these risks are runway incursions, incidents / accidentsat aprons, ground collisions, etc. This initiative has been implemented by the Integral Safety Office(ISO) which is accommodated by the Safety, Security and Environment department. In order to realize risk based reduction of interface risks, three Senior Programme Managers Safety work with the Director ISO.

What will you do as a Senior Programme Manager Safety

You are part of a team at Schiphol Group and work closely with different companies in the Dutch aviation sector: ATC, airlines, ground handlers, refuelling companies. You enable fact-based cross-sectoral decision making on safety risks at Schiphol. The results are recorded in the Roadmap Safety Improvement Schiphol which you maintain. You make sure that effective ways of working are developed and applied together with the safety organizations of the companies at Schiphol. You take an entrepreneurial approach to get things done while maintaining a high quality standard for the joint results. You report to the Programme Director Integral Safety Organization and work closely with the managers and safety experts in sector projects.

Your activities include the following:

  • Steer joint incident investigations and joint risk analysis for change projects;
  • Develop, maintain and apply methodologies for joint safety management;
  • Develop and maintain the Roadmap Safety Improvement Schiphol;
  • Enable monitoring effectiveness of risk mitigations through the sector safety dashboard;
  • Support decision-making and administration in cross-sectoral taskforces with data analysis and high quality documentation;
  • Work with the various companies at Schiphol airport;

Your main results:

  • Well-founded decisions by the top-management of the aviation sector about safety risks;
  • Effective safety improvementsin ground handlingand flight operations;
  • Contribute to risk reduction action by effective support of senior management in the sector;
  • Being a convincing, inspiring sparring partner both internally and externally.

Jij bent

Your added value

You are familiar with safety management methodologies and know how to get things done in a multi-organisation setting. You have knowledge of operational processes, a structured way of working and are able to quickly grasp complex challenges. Further more, you are personable and a convincing communicator at all levels. Establishing good working relations is of utmost importance to you. You have a minimum of 5 years working experience in risk management including the development/improvement of methodologies. Experience with quantitative risk modelling is a plus. You worked in an operationally driven organization or were hired by such companies as a consultant. A WO degree in engineering, business administration or equivalent education is required. Fluency in, both verbal and written, English and Dutch is a must have. Experience with (big) data analysis is a plus.
