As Project Coordinator Research, you will play a coordinating role together with the Project Manager Research, Research Track Leads, VP Research, and a team of multidisciplinary engineers. Your mission is to:
Define and implement research projects, and deliver the results in a timely manner and within budget.
This implies that you proactively monitor and coordinate the milestones, deliverables, and budgets of designated teams/projects. A day as Research Project Coordinator at Lightyear
Let's start by saying Lightyear is very flexible in terms of your working hours, we offer near-full remote working with any office equipment we need to work ergonomically (and a work-at-home budget to upgrade your internet). If needed, or desired, you can spend your working time at our modern office at the Automotive Campus close to Helmond (travel allowance included). Here you can enjoy a good cup of coffee, tea or hot chocolate, fresh fruit and experience the buzz of the office and the labs/workshops.
So, let's assume it's Friday, you chose to come to our office and the first thing you do is grab your favourite wake-up drink before rolling into your first task of the day: leading a sprint review of one of your research projects to align the status of research activities of the week with all the team members (composed of electrical and mechanical engineers). You particularly need their input on the results of the final design verification in order to have a clear overview whether the design milestone in the upcoming month would be reached. It turns out that the latest series of tests were a success and only some minor adjustments would be needed for the final design, cool!
You finish your meeting on time which gives you ample time to go to one of the meeting rooms at the office to host an online review meeting of a consortium project with several external research partners. You are accompanied by several engineers, specialized in autonomous driving, who are responsible for the technical content of the project. The meeting goes rather well and all parties agree to continue working together on two prototypes prior to the next project milestone in the following quarter. However, the team envisages two major issues which can hinder the progress of the project in the upcoming months. You suggest several mitigation strategies and the team agrees to adopt one. To implement this mitigation strategy, you then volunteer to facilitate a follow-up technical workshop between two teams of engineers who manufacture the prototypes in the upcoming week. And then finally, it’s time for lunch!
You decided to go for a walk together with a few colleagues, because the weather is perfect today (the sun is ALWAYS shining in Helmond of course!). During walks like these, it's not all about work. You talk about when you will go mountain biking together or about what you have planned for the upcoming weekend. After lunch, you join a brainstorming session organized by VP research and attended by research track leads and the research project manager to discuss the necessary resources for five research projects which will start in the next two months. To recap the afternoon, you attend a regular 1-on-1 session with the research project manager to discuss your weekly progress as well as your plan for the upcoming week. You agree to mentor three new interns who will join next month so that they can properly manage their projects.
At the end of the day enjoy your well deserved Friday afternoon drink or one of the fun activities our happiness team comes up with!
