Who we are

A piece of the moon, a complete dinosaur skeleton, the Pope's hat, the world's smallest book - at Catawiki, we come across exceptional objects such as these every day. The special object you’ve been searching for, or a new and unexpected interest you never thought you’d have: the more you look, the more you’ll find. And at Catawiki, there’s always more to the story.

Our experts value, authenticate and curate everything from automobiles to vintage stamps, so everything you encounter is real and layered with meaning - waiting to be found.

Our mission is to connect passionate enthusiasts with the objects that tell their stories. As Europe’s fastest growing online auction platform, we help over 10 million people discover new treasures every month. This means we are continually growing and always on the lookout for new talent!

Born and raised in The Netherlands, we started in 2008 and have since grown to over 650 Catawikians, working across 7 international offices, while maintaining our start-up mentality every step of the way. In December 2020 we received a new €150m investment round led by Permira and are excited to be growing out our team and business further across the world.

What you will do

The Sales Director of Art & Antiques’ ultimate goal is to grow & develop assigned Sellers and Leads within Catawiki’s strict quality framework, to ensure a constantly growing flow of quality supply on our platform.

  • 1/ You will manage and grow the Sales team for the Art & Antiques department of Catawiki to the next stage in line with our fast growth of the business. The Sales team is an international group of experienced account managers with various backgrounds in sales, art history, and design, sharing a great passion for the categories they are taking care of. The Sales team plays a crucial role in identifying, prospecting, onboarding, managing and upselling Sellers.Based on this foundation, you will be substantially extending the team in line with the department’s ambitious growth plans. The Sales team is responsible for generating both new business opportunities and growing existing businesses as key accounts.

  • 2/ You will set up the Sales quarterly budget, and closely monitor it, through our sales KPI’s. You will analyse existing work processes and implement improvements to optimize the overall sales results. You detect business opportunities, and are able to quickly and effectively adapt to notable changes.

  • 3/ You will define and implement strategies to find new business opportunities, across our 8 categories. Specifically, you will a) define our “in the field” acquisition strategy in our core markets but especially in Italy, France, BeNeLux, Germany and b) Display opportunism: you will facilitate our top line growth once an assigned (prospect) Seller is willing and able to accelerate within our strict quality framework

  • 4/ You will be responsible for monitoring the Sales relationships with our Top Sellers and will manage a limited set of Top Sellers accounts directly. Through the Sales team, you will be responsible for growing and educating the whole portfolio of partners, ensuring compliance with the best-in-class standards

You will report directly to the General Manager structure of the Art & Antiques department and will be part of the Art & Antiques Management Team.

Tasks and responsibilities

  • Achieve and surpass quarterly targets and goals, for the team as well as for the Account Managers;
  • Recruit, hire and train new Account Managers - with a view to have several “on the field” Account Managers by the end of 2021
  • Execute job interviews, performance appraisals and coach the Account Managers
  • Keep the team informed on new Products and Services at Catawiki
  • Conduct (weekly) team meetings to increase individual and team success
  • Identify, monitor and develop the most important Sales KPIs
  • Prepare and communicate Sales reports
  • Lead the daily operations of the Sales team (e.g. resource planning, quality assurance)
  • Based on the Sales KPIs, you will display Accountability - you will be ready to make difficult choices when an assigned (prospect) seller is not willing or able to abide by Catawiki’s rules
  • Optimize existing work processes and sales strategies
  • Coordinate the efforts with the other departments (Experts, Customer Experience, Marketing, Product and Commercial Operations) to improve customer success
  • Identify category-specific landscapes and trends
  • Effectively communicate the Catawiki value proposition through proposals and presentations
  • Meet with Top Sellers and act as their consultant
  • Operate in the cross-functional, matrix environment: the Sales Director is expected to work closely with other members of the Arts & Antiques Management Team, as well as other functions within the company. Here at Catawiki we strongly believe that functional leaders can only be successful when moving in sync with other functions.

What are we looking for?

  • A strong leader with a minimum of ten years international experience in the sales industry
  • Bachelor's degree in the commercial, marketing, business or communications field;
  • Analytical and data-driven
  • Proactive and strategic: must be able to challenge the status quo, suggest new processes, drive and adapt to change, take initiatives and think out of the box
  • Good relationship builder: must be able to build trust externally (Sellers) and internally (other Catawiki department), be solution-oriented, show understanding, provide solutions
  • Automated sales software (Salesforce, Hubspot, ...) experience
  • Fluency in English and at least one other language;
  • Able to quickly establish credibility and report the results to the management team.
  • Ability to collaborate with various departments to achieve team goals
  • Ability to deal with complex problems internally and externally affecting seller performance
  • Online platform or e-Commerce international experience - Preferred
  • Matrix organization of significant size - Preferred
