What will you do as a CFD Aero Development Engineer?

As a CFD Aero Development Engineer you will become part of the aerodynamics domain which is part of our bigger engineering triangle. The aerodynamics domain at Lightyear has the challenging objective to design the most aerodynamic, low drag vehicle that is currently on the road. In order to achieve this, we will create a new standard in which aerodynamics, styling and technology go hand in hand. Excellent prediction of aerodynamic properties with the use of CFD simulations is essential to reach this goal. While we highly value CFD simulations, you will dedicatedly work on improving our numerical tools continuously.

Therefore, your role will focus on but is not limited to:

  • Updating the simulation settings and methods to increase the accuracy and add new functionality that is up to date with industry best practices.
  • Correlation of the methods with experimental results
  • Optimisation of the CFD workflow for an increase in efficiency and reduction of throughput time
  • Automation for pre and post simulations activities
  • Advice company wide on simulation activities

So, what does a random day look like? Well, you start your day by checking the results of the simulations that ran overnight. afterwards, you dive into some additional post-processing by comparing the results with wind tunnel data to verify your simulations. Luckily, you can conclude your study on an update of the solver setting for side wind simulations. While time flies, you’ll finish the report on this study which you’ll present later on during the weekly aerodynamics meeting. Last but not least, you release the vfinal_trial6_2 settings to the shared repository. The day ends with a meeting with your IT-colleagues and simulation departments on the options of expanding the in-house High Performance Cluster (HPC).

Why is this an awesome job you ask? Well, essentially, at Lightyear we aim to make the most aerodynamic car across the globe while we balance out aerodynamics, esthetics and technology. Since we consider efficiency as our key performance metric, you’ll make a significant impact on many trade-offs being made thanks to your simulations. There’s a lot of freedom since we want to further develop our numerical tools. While the added value of such tooling is cultivated, it offers a lot of perspective to play around and further professionalize it. Apart from that, you’ll become part of a small scaled team which enables entrepreneurship and gives you the opportunity to add your favorite flavor to the Lightyear recipe.

So, that sounds too good to be true, doesn’t it? What’s the catch? Well, frankly, some days will be spent mostly behind your computer. So you’ll need plenty of coffee!

Furthermore, we are looking for these traits:

  • A Master's degree in a relevant field of engineering (e.g. aerospace, fluid mechanics, mechanics, physics, computer science, scientific computing, mathematics, aerodynamics)
  • +5 years experience in relevant position
  • Experience with CFD software / underlying mathematics (OpenFoam is preferred, Fluent is also considered)
  • Experience with optimisation tools is also considered
  • Skilled in the programming languages: Python, bash, C++. Javascript is also considered
  • Advanced user of Linux
  • Familiar and related experience in the use of HPC environments (AWS is a plus)
