Framestore is seeking to recruit a senior R&D developer to drive the evolution of our crowd technology. Framestore’s existing crowd tools, which have assisted in delivering complex shows such as Thor Ragnarök, Fantastic Beasts 2, the Aeronauts and Mulan, connect together third party tools such as Houdini and Massive with our pipeline as well as our proprietary technology for hair, simulation and rendering. In the light of COVID-19, we are looking to evolve this existing system to leverage recent advances in crowd preview, simulation and data exchange.

In this role, you will be touching on many aspects of Framestore’s pipeline and technology; Integration with the in-house renderer, Freak as well as with hair, cloth and custom simulation systems. You will be working with various heads of departments as well as R&D tech leads to architect, plan and implement a workflow for exporting, rendering and simulating photo real crowd assets, targeting USD as the platform for data exchange. The work would involve integration with existing in-house tools as well as the development of new workflows and technology.

We are looking for a seasoned R&D engineer with 5+ years of software development experience in VFX R&D or similar. You have experience of crowd systems or similar complex workflows where multiple tools need to be connected. You are familiar with Maya and Houdini and have experience writing Maya C++ Plugins and understand how to write render time procedurals and similar plugin integrations. You are an experienced C++ developer who is used to working in an agile process and have experience leading smaller projects in a at times fast paced production environment.

Responsibilities

  • Take a leadership role in planning and steering the development of the next generation crowd platform.
  • Work closely with pipeline engineers, R&D tech leads and heads of departments to design and deliver efficient data exchange workflows between tools.
  • Help mentor other R&D engineers via code review, an inclusive planning process and via technical design reviews.
  • Help ensure strong best practices around agile processes, C++ coding standards and software design.

Requirement

​This position requires strong software skills, expertise in developing and supporting technology through production and experience in leading other developers. In particular, we are looking for:

  • Degrees in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or related fields.
  • Several years of experience of C++ software development in Linux/Unix.
  • Experience with Qt and OpenGL
  • 5+ years of Software/R&D experience in a VFX production company
  • Experience with developing plugins and integrations for 3D DCC applications, including Maya and Houdini
  • Experience of software development in an agile team environment, including the use of source control systems, revision management and maintenance
  • Track record of successful team leadership of a development team
  • Technical knowledge of data exchange formats in VFX, including Alembic and ideally USD.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Optional skills and experience

  • Experience of crowd workflows in VFX or similar
  • Python experience
  • Experience with USD plugin and delegate development
  • Knowledge of high performance render procedurals

At present the initial role will be remote only due to the current pandemic.

Once all London Services return to normal then the role will be an onsite one so ideally the candidate needs to be able to commute into Central London easily.
