For our innovatice R&D location in Bad Salzuflen (with liberal Home Office possibilities) we are looking for a Development Lead who will be responsible for leading Corn Seeds Germplasm Development till handover with Product Placement scientist for their respective market segment (Silage EAME). Managing a breeding program, this will also include the management of the germplasm development team for the given market segment.

Your responsibilities:

  • Breeding and Germplasm Development Lead: working in a team environment in Europe, manage and deliver breeding projects in corn EAME Silage, leading breeding team and managing his own breeding program.
  • Team to deliver products that fit the portfolio needs in term of number and performance
  • Enable R&D capabilities and his team development: planning, supporting and contributing to efficient growth, capacity and capability building and critical mass in corn EAME Germplasm Development team, structure and processes.
  • Enable new breeding technologies: lead the implementation of predictive breeding selection in combination with DH deployment, efficient breeding schemes, and innovative approaches for product selection.
  • Optimization and focus for Corn EAME germplasm development process: allocate resources across the stage plan focusing on target destination maximizing genetic gain and efficient product delivery.
  • Leading the cross functional Market Segment Team to identify and fill our customer needs

Critical knowledge:

  • Expert of the Silage corn crop, the regional customers and the wide breadth of technology that can be leveraged from internal and external skill sets
  • Solid knowledge of portfolio management principles, practices, methods of analysis, scenario planning
  • Thorough understanding of R&D processes and sufficient knowledge to identify the critical issues and engage effectively with people.
  • Knowledge of Syngenta functions supporting R&D, the critical interfaces and those systems relevant for portfolio/project management and finance.
  • Knowledge of corn breeding methods
  • Knowledge of logistics and timeframe involved in a breeding program.
  • Knowledge of management and analysis of breeding/R&D information
  • A thorough knowledge of breeding theory (genetics, statistics, genetic gain theory, and field plot technique). A thorough knowledge of relevant germplasm. Good knowledge of marker applications and Predictive methods to breeding.
  • Demonstrated commercial breeding success in Corn.
  • Understanding of human behaviors, ambitions, drives

  • Significant experience of complex technical portfolio/project management within Syngenta, ideally in cross-business situations.

Critical technical, professional and personal capabilities

  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in Corn Breeding
  • M.S. (PhD preferred) in Agronomy, Plant Breeding/Genetics, or relevant field (B.S. with extensive experience may be considered)
  • Demonstrated commercial breeding success in Corn.
