JOB PURPOSE

  • Accountable for delivering the software that will power the next generation of LG connectivity devices, with exceptional stability and quality, ensuring timely delivery of technically ready products and services that can be taken to market in countries across Liberty Global's footprint.
  • Responsible for providing leadership of an agile software development team for in-home embedded router software. The team is comprised of a mixture of onshore and offshore resources.
  • The individual will fulfill the go-to software development leadership role for our Connectivity development organisation, for both new and already field deployed products in the Connectivity portfolio.
  • Liberty Global intend to use these teams as the seed for a DevOps transformation of the wider business.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

Lead a small team of developers working towards the delivery of embedded software that will be deployed across multiple operating countries and into millions of homes.

  • Mentor and develop more junior team members and contribute in increasing their knowledge and understanding.
  • Drive the design and set the direction for the embedded software for Liberty Global Connectivity platforms against requirements set by the business.
  • Provide an interface between the Architects and the wider developer group, assisting to interpret requirements and changes that are needed in the software, and develop specifications.
  • Review the implemented system, understand and interpret the error reports, troubleshoot and debug them in the embedded environment and provide instant fixtures for the same.
  • Help define and refine the continuous integration pipeline, and own the set-up of the development environment.
  • Continuously refine the development process to improve agility and efficiency.
  • Own the development, integration and validation of CPE Software.
  • Own the documentation of operational and technical knowledge.
  • Steer development of open source software towards upstreaming.

KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE

PREFERRED EDUCATION / QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree in computer science or engineering, or similar qualification by experience
  • Fluent spoken and written English – ideally other European languages

SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Experience in the cable, satellite or telco Connectivity Customer Premises Equipment software development would be advantageous.
  • Proven track record in software development.
  • Thorough experience with version control, specifically git, as well as other collaborative development tools. Deep understanding of software development workflows, and how tools can be used to improve quality and efficiency.
  • Expertise in user space Linux development, in C and shell scripting.
  • Basic understanding of kernel space Linux development.
  • Understanding of security aspects. At minimum a basic understanding and practical experience with cryptography, a good understanding of secure programming best practices, some experience with Linux system hardening, and basic knowledge of network threat analysis.
  • Experience with different embedded SOC architectures including ARM, MIPS and Intel x86 architectures.
  • Deep customer premises equipment hardware and software development/industrialization knowledge and experience.
  • Proven experience with software build systems. Experience with OpenEmbedded is a big plus.
  • Understanding of open source ecosystems.
  • Excellent ability to quickly assimilate and understand software development challenges.
  • Good overall knowledge/familiarity with telecommunications access technologies that may include: Ethernet, DOCSIS, xDSL etc.
  • Excellent working knowledge of current IP communication protocols.
  • Good knowledge of/familiarity with wireless LAN protocols.
  • Effective executive level written and spoken, presentation and communication skills.
  • Ability to bring clarity to ambiguous situations and to act decisively.
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills to broadly influence and effectively forge partnerships both internally and externally.
  • Systematic, disciplined, and analytical approach to problem solving.
  • Ability to be supportive, consultative and collaborative and to work effectively across national boundaries.
  • At ease and effective in operating in an international working environment.
