The data engineers working on the large quantities of data that form the basis of our different data products are spread across a variety of cross functional scrum teams. To make sure we continue to share knowledge and grow the expertise of all our engineers, we work in overarching chapters, bringing all data engineers together to share experience, work together on issues and help each other improve.

We are specifically looking for an experienced data engineer who wants both a technical challenge in further expanding our data platform but would also like to be given the space to develop into a more people focused role. Our Chapter Lead role combines the two.

What does a Chapter Lead do?

As a senior data engineer you will spend about 80% of your time working as part of our DataHub team. Our DataHub team is responsible for providing the basis for our data infrastructure, a self-service data platform, that is the nervous centre for our other data product teams.

You will help design and develop the cloud-based platform and together with the rest of the team you will be involved in the full product development process, from design and implementation, to testing, documentation and automated deployment.

This includes:

  • Building and managing the DataHub frontend, including a data catalogue, DataHub users and project management, data subscriptions and more
  • Developing ways to improve self-service data consumption and data publishing including building and managing ETL pipelines in Airflow (responsible for ingesting the data and making it available to users), developing standard ways to deliver data in the DataHub, developing CI/CD pipelines and more
  • Producing high quality code and reusable components, using containerization, CI/CD and other automation technologies
  • You will be responsible for creating a backend for high availability and scalability, while at the same time being easily deployable, manageable and secure

The other 20% of your time you will spend on activities related to your chapter. You will be using your experience to help grow the collective expertise within the chapter and support the other individuals within it. You will identify skill gaps and development opportunities with the members of the chapter and liaise with domain managers on training and coaching. You will also work closely with the tech leads of the individual teams to determine best practices and standards.

Above all, you will contribute to creating a safe environment where transparency and feedback are valued and positive, and members can grow and learn.

So what would we like you to know and bring to the table?

  • Our small, agile teams are just that: agile. We like experiments and exploration, so you should be able to adapt to a variety of challenges and like quick feedback loops.
  • Demonstrated experience working in our tech stack, especially Python and AWS cloud, but also Git, Jenkins and Linux
  • Strong prioritization skills and an ability to take colleagues along in your work
  • You take pride in your sometimes complex work but are able to break this down to more junior members of your chapter
  • A team mentality and passion for both learning and helping others improve
  • Experience with scripting/automation of tasks
  • Experience with common devops and CI/CD practices to make your own work as easy as possible and guarantee the quality of our products
  • Be comfortable working in test-driven development and know what this means
  • Extra tech experience that impresses us: containerization platforms like ECS, EKS and Docker; Redshift; AWS serverless services (Lambda, API GW, SNS); SQL databases; Django; Airflow
