Job Description

Personal tax – get the career you want at RSM

Our personal tax programme will give you all the skills and support you need to unlock a future that’s packed with opportunities and new experiences. You’ll enjoy a powerful combination of on-the-job learning and structured training – not to mention an impressive client list to work with. Join our team and discover a culture that nurtures individuality and an environment where everyone is supported to reach their potential. With us, you’ll always be moving forward.

What does our personal tax team do?

Tax is a fact of life – it’s deducted from our wages, added to things we buy, paid by companies and rarely out of the news headlines these days. But a career in tax isn’t just about numbers. It’s about working with people and businesses to make sure tax doesn’t become an obstacle to their long-term goals. On a day-to-day basis, our team helps individuals comply with the shifting requirements of the tax authorities and pay the right amount of tax. This includes helping private clients complete individual self-assessment tax returns. We also provide tax advice to individuals, partnerships and trusts at every stage of their life cycle. This includes capital gains, wills, inheritance tax and pensions planning tax advice. We also support clients who want to make tax-efficient investments and those preparing to exit a business.

What can you expect?

Our programme will give you a solid foundation in a broad range of tax issues. With us, you’ll be involved in projects from day one – anything from liaising with clients to preparing and completing tax returns for HMRC. The variety of work we do and the range of clients we work with mean you’ll have plenty of opportunity to discover a career path that fits your interests and long-term goals. With our support you’ll have the space to grow professionally so you can confidently take on ever-more challenging tasks. At RSM, you’ll gain hands-on experience, have access to on-the-job mentoring and train towards a professional tax qualification. Through our expert training programmes, you will work towards the CTA qualification either through the Tax Pathway route (ATT/CTA) or the Joint Programme route (ACA/CTA). We are committed to ensuring that the route through to qualification is the best for you as an individual and maximises your potential. Alongside your technical training, you will attend internal developmental training courses to ensure you have the professional and personal skills to become a trusted Chartered Tax Advisor. As you come towards the end of your studies, you’ll have a deep understanding of personal tax. This will be reflected in the complexity of your client portfolio and your responsibilities, including mentoring more junior members of the team.

What we look for

Tax is a technically demanding discipline, so we look for graduates who are always up for a challenge and are quick to grasp new subjects. While you don’t have to be a maths genius, you will need to be comfortable with numbers. At RSM, you’ll be helping a big range of clients - from wealthy individuals to major multinationals - so it’s important that you’re adaptable. You’ll often need to explain complex technical information during client meetings and in written reports, so we’re looking for graduates with excellent verbal and written communication skills. We also look for team players who enjoy interacting with others and are curious about how businesses work. If that sounds like you, we know you’ll enjoy being part of our team.

Minimum Qualifications

Entry requirements

At RSM, we don't just look for good exam results. We think passion, personality and originality are just as important.

  • You will need: 112 UCAS (new tariff) across 3 A Levels or 104 (new tariff) across 4 Scottish Highers/Advanced Highers
  • A predicted/obtained honours degree.

UCAS changed their points system so under the old tariff it would be 280 or 260 points respectively.

Why RSM

RSM is the size and shape it is today because we haven’t been afraid to develop and evolve. Reflecting the world we live in, and the society we’re part of helps us to be a better place to work. The experiences, insights and goals that make you one-of-a-kind are also what make you invaluable to us. RSM thrives because of the people who work with us, and there are no limits to what we will achieve together. That is the power of being understood.

RSM UK shares skills, insight and resources, as well as a client-centric approach that’s based on a deep understanding of business.
