The position of assistant professor One Health falls within the research theme 'One Health microbial'. In this field interdisciplinary research is conducted focusing on microbial and other exposures and health effects of intensive livestock farming, food safety and veterinary public health related issues. The group in which this position will be located has a strong background in the (human) exposure sciences, environmental epidemiology and public health. Active collaboration exists with groups with expertise in (molecular) microbiology in the medical and veterinary faculties of Utrecht University. Studies that are conducted focus on epidemiological studies to mitigate animal/environmental and food-associated human health risks. Research is expected to develop innovative ways for assessing risks for environmental exposures, as well as human and animal health and welfare, based on diverse and complex sources of data.

In 2020 a so called REGIODEAL project will start which will focus on implementing circular farming practices in a large sample of farms. These farms will be integrally monitored on aspects of environmental emissions, animal welfare, animal diseases and public health so that evidence based decisions can be made about the future implementation of circular practices. A major task of the assistant professor will be to coordinate the IRAS contributions to this 3-4 year project and initiate active collaboration with other Utrecht and external research partners (WUR). The candidate will also be involved in teaching courses which are part of the One Health research master programme which now runs for three years and Veterinary Public Health education as part of the Veterinary Medicine Master program.

Profiel

We are looking for a veterinarian who obtained a PhD and has expertise in quantitative, infectious disease epidemiology, or an epidemiologist who obtained a PhD in environmental or occupational epidemiology and microbial risks with preferably an epidemiology B qualification, or anyone with comparable expertise. Furthermore, the candidate should be a team player with experience in analysis of exposure data and epidemiological data. Teaching experience is a pre. The candidate should be able to speak Dutch because of his or her key role in the REGIODEAL project.

Aanbod

We offer a position (1.0 FTE) for one year, which could be extended after a go/no go evaluation. The gross salary - depending on previous qualifications and experience - ranges between €3,637 and €4,978 (scale 11 according to the Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities) per month for a full-time employment. Salaries are supplemented with a holiday bonus of 8% and a year-end bonus of 8.3% per year. In addition, Utrecht University offers excellent secondary conditions, including an attractive retirement scheme, (partly paid) parental leave and flexible employment conditions (multiple choice model). In addition, the faculty provides specialist clinical care in the largest academic veterinary hospital in Europe. Due to this position the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine is a point of contact for all veterinary matters, both national and increasingly international. The faculty employs approximately 900 veterinarians, scientists and support staff and counts 1.500 students.

IRAS is an inter-facultary research institute within the Faculties Veterinary Medicine, and Medicine of Utrecht University.
