WHAT WILL YOU BE DOING?

Although laser point clouds have become a common data resource for world modelling, photogrammetrically derived digital surface models are still widely used as the basis for a terrain modelling work flow. With current high resolution camera systems, highly detailed Digital Surface Models (DSM) can be obtained. Digital Terrain Model (DTM) filtering is used to remove features from the DSM and obtain a ground level elevation model. Although DTM filtering is a basic step in terrain modelling, it is still a challenging task. One of the difficulties is the filtering of forested areas in hilly terrain, but also rough terrain is often not a trivial case.

This research will aim at finding improved filtering and interpolation techniques to resolve the difficulties in DTM filtering for photogrammetrically derived DSM’s. You will work with several real-world datasets featuring different terrain types and filtering challenges. The results of your work will be applied to ongoing 3D interactive environment modelling projects.

WHAT DO WE REQUIRE OF YOU?

  • You’re currently pursuing your Master degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Geomatics, Artificial Intelligence or a related technical field.
  • Your curriculum includes a strong programming component and you are an experienced programmer in a modern language such as C++, Java or C#.
  • You have an affinity for modeling, simulation and / or 3D visualization technology.
  • Experience with GIS data processing is a bonus.

WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT OF YOUR WORK SITUATION?

The department of Modelling, Simulation and Gaming (MSG) at TNO has extensive experience with applying modelling and simulation technology to the challenges our customers face in the Defense, Safety and Security domain. Main topics of research are modelling the world as an interactive 3D environment and simulating the dynamic behavior of humans and systems in such environments. Our knowledge base and engineering experience are complemented with our world-class experimentation facilities; the advanced Concept Development & Experimentation (CD&E) Environment (ACE) is an important tool for the interactive analysis of customer needs and its translation into the reality of the operational environment. Combined, MSG enables TNO to use advanced simulation technologies to effectively address the strategic and operational problems of our customers. Examples are support to military operations in Mali and evacuation simulation of cities in case of a flood.

WHAT CAN TNO OFFER YOU?

You want to work on the precursor of your career; a work placement gives you an opportunity to take a good look at your prospective future employer. TNO goes a step further. It’s not just looking that interests us; you and your knowledge are essential to our innovation. That’s why we attach a great deal of value to your personal and professional development. You will, of course, be properly supervised during your work placement and be given the scope for you to get the best out of yourself. Naturally, we provide suitable work placement compensation.
