Electrical and electronic engineering is everywhere. From fitting out advanced warship systems to designing cutting-edge augmented reality products, we provide our customers with better capability, reliability and availability of their critical assets. You’ll spend between two to four years getting involved in anything from defence engineering to complex nuclear projects.

As part of our Nuclear sector, Babcock’s HMNB Clyde operation works closely with the Ministry of Defence as a commercial partner to provide highly specialist engineering support services, including the management of critical infrastructure. We also deliver operational maintenance, upgrades and repairs to support Royal Navy vessels, including Vanguard and Astute-class nuclear submarines based in Scotland.

Our waterfront activities at Clyde include supporting naval surface ships, with responsibility for managing engineering work on base-ported Mine Warfare Vessels and carrying out emergency and scheduled maintenance on other visiting Royal Navy and foreign naval vessels.

To make the most of the opportunities working for Babcock at Clyde has to offer, you’ll need to have great technical skills along with the drive and aspiration to develop your career. Our graduates will have the opportunity to use their knowledge from their engineering degrees to help us deliver our ongoing critical support to the Royal Navy.

Your development programme will have a strong focus on undertaking a number of different placements which will be agreed in line with evolving business requirements and provide you with a high level of on-the-job training. You will also be given the fantastic opportunity to network and knowledge share your experiences through our modular two-year graduate development programme. Through these experiences you will come to understand the pivotal role you will play in our future success, how we function as an organisation, our internal culture, the importance of our customers and the wider business environment.

OUR LOCATIONS

Your home base will be Clyde Dockyard, but some of your placements may be at other Marine sector locations. As many of our programmes are available at more than one location you will have the opportunity, at the end of the online application form, to select a second and/or third choice location that you would want your application to be considered for.

WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING

Working in a discipline of such fundamental importance means that you could work on anything. You could be on the team designing submarines, refitting warships, or helping to build the UK’s next generation of nuclear power plants. The possibilities are endless.

Day-to-day, you could find yourself working on electrical power distribution or electrical control and instrumentation, involving both analogue and digital systems. Our graduates get involved in everything from concept design and AutoCAD layouts to testing, installation, commissioning and handover to clients. You’ll be working within multidisciplinary teams, investigating solutions to engineering problems. You may also find yourself managing projects and leading your own team.

WHAT YOU’LL GET OUT OF IT

This is a great programme to give you a full overview of what we’re about. You’ll see how important the projects we work on are and how important electrical and electronic engineers like you are to our projects. You’ll enjoy a competitive starting salary of £29k - £31k and we’ll be completely behind you as you work towards Incorporated or Chartered Engineer status.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

A 2:2 BEng (Hons) degree in a related subject area (e.g. Electrical and Electronic Engineering) that is accredited by IET is desirable. You’ll also need to satisfy the MOD’s security requirements (and may need to complete a medical assessment). For our Marine – Plymouth and Bristol programmes we also accept relevant degrees in Systems, Computing or IT disciplines.
